RESUMO

The violence has afflicted schools around the world and Brazil has a higher incidence in public schools. This is an educational social problem that requires the involvement of government, the school community and the whole society to resolve it. The UNESCO Chair of Youth, Education and Society at the Brasília Catholic University has done research on this topic in public schools of the Federal District in partnership with the Public Attorneys Office of the Federal District including the involvement of police in schools as a possibility of rescue and safety improving the living environment in the school. However, there are reports of dissatisfaction of the police action and, contrary to expectations, its presence in some cases seems more forward insecurity and discrimination to students. On this possible mismatch, this study describes the views of head teachers, teachers, students, members Council of School Security and the police bring the pros and cons of the police role in combating school violence in the Federal District. We performed semi-structured interviews, focus groups, questionnaires and observation tours of four schools in the public network considered among the most violent, located in three administrative regions of the Federal District. The head teachers, members of Security Council School, teachers, students and the police were unanimous in saying that the police presence in school is important to combat violence, especially when there is a relationship of friendship and trust between the police, the school direction, students and their parents. It was observed that the police were assimilated to the educational environment of the participating school also running educational functions. It is suggested that public policies are developed in order to create seminars and projects to further involve the police with the school components and the family in school activities and thus improve the relationship between the police and the school community and consequently reduce the problem of school violence.
