RESUMO

The scientific article â considered a way of acting, participating and constructing sociorhetorical scientific knowledge â is part of the system of genres of the domain of scientific discourse. Based on the sociorhetorical conception of textual genres and suppositions of the new rhetoric, the objective of this research is to investigate the construction of the persuasive process of a scientific article in the disciplines of history and sociology, as well as to investigate the mode through which the ethos of the writers who wrote these articles was constructed. Therefore, we identify the patterns of rhetorical organization of articles in the two disciplines, establishing relations with the cultural peculiarities of the respective disciplinary communities, as well as analyze the practice of citations and ways of self mentioning as sociorhetoric strategies employed by writers, with the purpose of constructing ethos. The corpus is composed of forty scientific articles â twenty from history and twenty from sociology. They were collected from eight journals â four per discipline â over a period of five years (2003 to 2007). The results suggest that the persuasive process of historical and sociological scientific articles is constructed through disciplinary identity, which is formed from the incorporation of habitus and the conjunction of specialized frames from the respective community. It grants the writer a disciplinary ethos. The data point to some regularity, but also suggest diversity in the patterns and in the sociorhetoric functions of the genre. This is probably the result of the constructive heterogeneity of the epistemic culture of the disciplines, the distinct communicative purposes of the genre, and the audiences and diversified rhetoric situations
