RESUMO

Since mankind early history, understanding phenomena like the pain has been a great concern of the human being. The pain afflicts millions of people around the world and it is the most frequent complain in the emergency rooms. The pain was established as the âfifth vital signalâ due to its importance and its need of treatment. This work was prompt by headache high prevalence in the general population and in particular university students. The main goal is to estimate pain prevalence, mainly as headache in university students during 24 hours period. The most prevalent pain was the headache with 18.9 % (79/417) followed by back pain with 11.8 %. Headache is more frequent in females with 23.8%, giving a male/female ratio of 1 : 1.7 (p<0.05). Using the 2004 Headache International Classification, results show a 5.7% tension pattern headache prevalence in females and a 2.4% in males giving a ratio of 1 : 2.4 . In case of pattern migraines, the prevalence is 2.9% in females and 1.4 % in males providing a ratio of 1 : 2.07 . For university students, it was observed a larger prevalence (22.8 %) for sedentary ones (p=0.035), stressed (p<0.001) and sleepless (p=0.001) ones compared to full night sleep ones. For students with other health problems, it was observed that 25.4 % had headache (p=0.030) more frequently than healthy ones. Dipirone was the most widely used medicine (52.8%) to treat headache without prescription. In the multivariate analysis for headache causes, an adjusted logistic regression model shows that female students under regular to high stress and somewhat sleepless conditions have 31.8% probability of having headaches
