RESUMO

Introduction: The infection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a public health problem worldwide. Hepatitis C in Brazil is a major infectious disease found in pregnant women that can be transmitted from mother to child. Co-infection with HIV is a major problem for women already infected with HCV, because, among other factors, increase of HCV viral load, increasing the chances of vertical transmission. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of hepatitis C in pregnant women of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul and to evaluate the co-infection with HIV among pregnant women with confirmed cases of Hepatitis C, also featuring the prevalence according to age and the Microregion the State. Method: A survey of data from all pregnant women at the Pregnancy Protection Program of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul in the period November 2002 to December 2007. A total of 192.871 tests for the results of HCV in pregnant women were analyzed using the search in a database, where information such as age and municipality of origin of the infected pregnant women were also available. Was also analyzed, among women positive for HCV, the existence of co-infection with HIV. Results: Of the 192.871 women screened during this period, 244 (0,13%) were positive for HCV and 6 (2,44%) of these women had positive co-infection with HIV. The prevalence was more related to the age group 23 - 27 years (28,83%) and the microregion of Campo Grande. Conclusions: The prevalence of HCV infection in pregnant women showed up in the frequency of variations found in the literature and is considered low when compared to some jobs available and lower the standard of endemicity reported by the National Program for Prevention and Control of Viral Hepatitis of the Ministry Health A co-infection with HIV also presented within the standards already published, but well below in relation to other studies.
