RESUMO

This work is a summary of the most important problems caused by heating in railway wheels. It shows how heat is generated during braking, how many heat goes into the wheel, the temperature distribuition, thermal stresses and its influence in the material fatigue. It puts foward the problem related to structural changes caused by heating and mentions its most likely causes. Then this work shows the results of some tests done according to Krauss pattern in a machine designed specially for this. Besides it points out the lines of research to be developed from results of wheel material fatigue test, temperature distribuition, micrografic analysis and temperature and friction coeficient measurements done in Krauss test to brake shoes. This work intends to be a guide for early studies in railway wheels heating
