RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of physical and mental aggravation in elderly people, focusing on their quality of life, functional capability, religiosity, physical and mental health, and socio-demographic aspects. Eighty-two subjects, age 60 or older, were assisted by the family health physicians at the health care center of Souzas, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. This work was based on the Epidemiological and Demographic Transition, the Health Ministry Guidelines for the Family Health Program, the National Policies for Senior Citizens? Health (PNI), and the Elderly Statute. A multidimensional evaluation questionnaire was used to interview the patients individually. The software package, SAS 6.12, was used for the statistical analyses. Results evidenced a very needed population (58.5% dwelling in rundown houses in areas lacking sewage system and asphalt) predominantly living with other people (only 13.4% live alone) and with a high prevalence of chronic diseases (an average of 3.5 per person), mental disorders (28.2% were considered ?psychiatric cases?), and loss of independence (26.8% needed help to accomplish at least one of their daily activities). The individuals who reported being non-retired, going to the evangelical church, having some incapability, having a large number of physical diseases, having used benzodiazepinics, and having private houses showed the lowest scores during the evaluation of self-perceived quality of life. Data analysis focused on the overall health of the elderly, with the attempt to provide active life expectancy for the families with the highest levels of functional independence
