RESUMO

In recent years, the study of issues related to teenagers has taken a central stage in various fields of knowledge, mainly, education and health, with particular attention put upon teenagers sexual and reproductive health. With the coming of AIDS, there has been an even greater concern to implement strategies to fight off the pandemic, emphasizing special cares to teenagers sexuality. This research aims to analyzing the scope and limitations of a Sexual Education Program with relation to STD/HIV/AIDS prevention implemented in Basic and Secondary Learning according to the perceptions of the teachers and students of a secondary school in Cape Verde. It is a qualitative case study with students of the 9th year and Social and Personal Education teachers. Data was collected using participant observation during lessons and individual, semi-structured, in depth interviews with 9 teachers and 11 students. The analysis of the information was carried out by ordering perceptions according to actor group and, later on, comparing individual perceptions about adolescence, sexuality and sexual education program, and establishing a dialogue with relevant theories. Results reveal different perceptions of adolescence, either as a problematic stage of tension or as a stage of transition and socio-cultural construction. Sexuality is perceived, for the subject of this research, as a socially constructed learning process depending on culture and environment. Even in a contemporary society, a clear difficulty to have an open dialogue between parents and children is perceived, especially with relation to sexuality, a topic still loaded with taboo and preconceptions. According to our informants, there is a disarticulation between school, family and church with relation to STD/HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy. Even though our informants acknowledge the importance of the sexual education program, they find it inappropriate given that it does not respond all the current demands of Cape-Verdian teenagers.
