RESUMO

This work represents the first comprehensive contribution to the knowledge of the pteridophyte flora of Caatinga vegetation (semi-arid region in northeastern Brazil and northern of Minas Gerais State). With the purpose to collecties and observies the species, localities along nine thousand kilometers of roads were visited. Samples deposited in regional herbaria were analised out. A total 12 families, 20 genera and 37 species of pteridophytes were registered: Acrostichum danaeifolium Langsd. &Fisch., Adiantum deflectens Mart., Anemia ferruginea Kunth, Anemia filiformis (Sav.) Sw., Anemia hirsuta (L.) Sw., Anemia mirabilis Brade, Anemia oblongifolia (Cav.) Sw., Anemia pastinacaria Moritz ex Prantl, Anemia tomentosa (Sav.) Sw., Azolla caroliniana Willd., Azolla filiculoides Lam., Azolla microphylla Kaulf., Blechnum serrulatum Rich., Cheilanthes eriophora (Fée) Mett., Dicranopteris linearis (Burm. f.) Underw., Doryopteris concolor (Langsd. &Fisch.) Kuhn, Doryopteris ornithopus (Mett.) J. Sm., Hemionitis tomentosa (Lam.) Raddi, Isoetes luetzelburgii Weber ex Luetzelburg, Marsilea ancylopoda A. Braun, Marsilea deflexa A. Braun, Marsilea minuta L., Marsilea polycarpa Hook. &Grev., Ophioglossum nudicaule L. f., Phlebodium decumanum (Willd.) J. Sm., Pityrogramma calomelanos (L.) Link, Pleopeltis macrocarpa (Bory ex Willd.) Kaulf., Polypodium polypodioides (L.) Watt,Polypodium triseriale Sw., Salvinia auriculata Aubl., Salvinia minima Baker, Salvinia oblongifolia Mart., Selaginella convoluta (Arn.) Spring, Selaginella erythropus (Mart.) Spring, Selaginella sellowii Hieron., Thelypteris interrupta (Willd.) K. Iwats. and Trachypteris pinnata (Hook. f.) C. Chr. Thirty one new references of species from several states from Brazil are registered. Notes on geographical distribution, illustrations of some species and distribution maps of each taxon on the Caatinga vegetation are provided in the first paper. Observations about ecological aspects, occurrences classes, threat intensity, economic importance and floristic relationship with an Atlantic Forest, Amazonic Forest, Cerrado and Chaco are discussed in the second paper. The similarity among 24 localities in the Caatinga vegetation was also analysed. The patterns of geographical distribution were disassed in third paper. Five local patterns were recognized: ample, moderately ample, restricted, very restricted and disjunct. The species were also classified with relation to the global patterns: cosmopolite, pantropical, neotropical, restricted to the South America and endemic tothe Brazil. These patterns were correlated to the phytogeographical provinces surrounding the Caatinga vegetation. The data presented indicate the presence of a flora of large geographical amplitude and environmental plasticity, probably originated from the moist tropical forests. Although most of the species are widely distributed in Brazil, the high representation of aquatic species and the low index of epiphytic species, among other characteristics, indicate an own identity of the pteridoflora of the Caatinga.
