RESUMO

The organizational culture can be understood as a set of values, conditions, beliefs, expectations, attitudes and shared norms which have the role to provide a sense of identity to all members of the organization. Present research aims at studying the relationship between gender and power, having as a basis the typologies of the organizational culture at Universidade Federal da Paraíba- UFPB (campus I- João Pessoa) and Universidade Estadual da Paraíba- UEPB (Campina Grande), taking into account the heads axel in charge of managing positions. Power, in this research, is established through the daily relationships marked by the hierarchy that is constituted by places, occupied by men and women, in the administrative structure while making decisions in both institutions. To give direction to such a study, the typology adopted is the one proposed by Quinn and Kimberly (1984), referring to the organizational culture corresponding to: group culture, innovative culture, rational culture and hierarchic culture. Proposed theoretically, the study was based on the various dimensions of the organizational culture by Moscovici (1988), such as: material dimension, psychosocial or political dimension and ideological dimension. To collect the data for this research, we used a structured questionnaire with closed, standardized and questions. The methodology adopted is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The results claim that, at UFPB, among the sample studied, most of the positions are occupied by men, and, at UEPB, the majority is occupied by women. However, in both universities, the highest managing positions, those which own the power to make decisions, are under the responsibility of men, shaping, thus, a hierarchical structure formed by the inequality of gender. Concerning the organizational culture, the data reveals the rational culture that underlies both universities. This rational culture is characterized by the conditions of accomplishment, performance, and search of results. The cultures that obtained the lowest representation, according to the data, were the hierarchic culture, whose level of significance was second and for UFPB and secondary, terciary to UEPB; the innovative culture which is the second most significant to UEPB and the terciary to UFPB; finally, the group culture which had the lowest level of significance in both universities.
