RESUMO

ABSTRACT BATTAGIN, Adriana M. Repercussions of the Myocardial Revascularization in a group of elderly people of the city of São Paulo. São Paulo, 2005. 114p. Dissertation (MA). Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. A qualifying research carried out with six elderly patients who underwent a Myocardial Revascularization surgery at Instituto do Coração (HCFMUSP), aiming to verify and analyze if there was any change in the functional capacity, in the mood, in the cognition of the elderly after three months of the heart surgery. The following tools were applied: the Basic Activities of Daily Living Scale (AVD), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (AIVD), Geriatric Depression Scale, Mini-Mental Exam and Interview carried out before and one to three months after the surgery. The results showed that in this group the heart surgery did not change the basic activities of daily living but the instrumental activities decreased due to the fact that the family took the responsibility as far as the control of expenses and the intake of medicine are concerned. The Depression Scale showed some suspicion of depression in five out of the six participants. Three of the elderly people presented suggestive scores of depression in the pre surgery time, the depressive symptoms of this group seemed to be related to the physical sufferance derived from the heart disease or to the psychical sufferance caused by the expectation and fear of the surgery. Other two elderly presented depressive symptoms in the pos surgery due to a decrease of the function capacity during the recovery. The results of the Mini-Mental Exam showed a mild cognitive deficit in five out of the six patients in the pre surgery period. It was noticed that two patients had a decrease of the general score one month after the surgery. These patients showed a temporary cognitive deficit that can be attributed to the effects of the anesthetic / and or medicine. The testimonies and the observations from the interviews helped to verify the decrease of the symptoms and the appearance of a better quality of life, despite the little time of observation.
