RESUMO

Investigations on the toxic compound-resistant phenotypes by microrganisms are regarded as relevant within the bio-technological, clinic and farming fields. In this work, we aimed to identify the co-relation between the resistance levels of yeast cells to the fungicide Benomyl and the presence of two yeast genes already related to have any influence in this response. A wild type strain of K. marxianus and several industrial strains of S. cerevisiae were surveyed for the inter and intraspecific va riance of such resistance. The molecular approach included the detection of certain alleles of both TUB2 and ICT1 genes. The TUB2 gene encodes the β-tubulin protein involved in cytoskeleton formation. Allele variation are involved in Benomyl resistance phenotype. The ICT1 gene is part of the MDR (Multi-drug Resistance) complex. Its biological function still unknown, although its inactivation causes drug sensitivity. The analysis on the cell growth kinetics, allied to the gene amplification profiles, suggested an intricate cell defense mechanism to this kind of drugs
