RESUMO

This taxonomic revision of Chaetostoma DC. (Microlicieae: Melastomataceae) is based on a detailed study of morphological characters of herbaria specimens and field observations. The genus Chaetostoma can be distinguished within the Microlicieae by the combination of the following diagnostic features: careenats, imbricats and pungents leaves; a crown of basally adnates and appressed hairs around the outward apex of the hypanthium; mature capsule longer than the hypanthium and angular seeds with reticulate testa cells. Seven species were exclued from Chaetostoma: Chaetostoma acuminatum, C castratum, C gardneri, C luetzelburgii, C microlicioides, C oxyantherum and C parvulum. Eleven species are recognized: Chaetostoma albiflorum, stat. nov . ( = C pungens val:. albiflora = C pungens var. pallidiflora); C cupressinum, comb. nov . ( = Microlicia cupressina = C luteum = C joannae = C trauninense); C fastigiatum; C flavum, sp. nov.; C glaziovii ( = C glaziovii var. rubella = C glaziovii varo pallida = C petronianum); C. inerme; C pungens ( = C longiflorum = C armatum = C pungens var. brachycarpa); C riedelianum; C se lagine um, comb. nov . ( = Microlicia selaginea); C scoparium ( = Microlicia clavillosa); C stenocladon, comb. nov. ( = Microlicia stenocladon = M amaroi). The Chaetostoma species are subschrubs, endemic or restricted to particular areas in the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraná (Brazil). Chaetostoma pungens is the species with the widest distribution and the widest morphological variation
