RESUMO

Oral health problems have been considered important causes of negative quality of life in individuous and society. Studies have shown that dental assistance can bring positive benefits for segments of the comunity. However, there is a lack of studies observing oral health, quality of life and their relationship with acess to dental assistance in the same comunity. The objetive of the present study was to analyse the influence of the presence of dental assistance in oral health status and quality of life of industry workers. This is a quantitative, exploratory and transversal study developed in a city of the metropolitan area of Fortaleza-Brasil. Data collection occured with the aid of a questionaire made of 20 questions regarding sócioeconomic and demografic issues, as well as caracteristics of the dental treatment in industries, the OIDP (Oral Impacts on Daily Performances) and WHOQOL-BREF. 356 workers participated in this study. Mean DMFT was 16,58 in the study group, where the company with its own dental assistance program (F1) presented better indexes than the company which have never had dental assistance program (F4). The average of sections free of periodontal disease, with bleading, and with dental calculus was respectively: 64,5%, 23,5% e 6,2%, where the company F1 presented the best indexes, while company F4 the worse ones. The use of superior prosthesis was more frequent than the use of inferior prosthesis in all companies. The results indicate that workers of companies with dental assistance present better oral health conditions than those from companies with no dental assistance programs. Workers from companies with dental assistance programs presented higher values for all for all WHOQOL-BREF domains, demonstrating better general quality of life. The impact of oral health conditions in workers quality of life was common (77%), but not strong, where the mean maximum value found was 18,8%. In conclusion, it can be said that workers from companies with dental assistance programs get easier access to dental assistance, better levels of satisfaction with the assistance provided, better oral health indexes and better quality of life.
