RESUMO

The school, seen as na institution wcich is responsible for the developmental process of human beings, as a whole, is a social construct, embedded in a historic character and depicting changes in its organization models. These changes derive from factors that interact in a particular dynamic, so as to contribute to the process of forming human beings. Therefore, school education must be directed towards the reality of human activity, from wich the meaning and the value of what is learned is linked to the meaning and the value that the individual attributes to himself/ herself while he/ she learns (or fails to learn), which will, then, generate development. The present study aimed at understanding the learning process of the EJA (Educação de Jovens e Adultos) students, who were involved, on a daily basis, in the formal schooling activities of two public schools of the city of Goiânia. During our research, the contradictions between the schools discourse of the actual current practice became evident. There was, in most cases, the attempt to justify the students problem by means of one of the ways of teaching and learning. We adopted the socio-historic perspective to address the problem, from the presupposition that the student is formed in the relationship with the real, concrete subjects that constitute the school, building knowledge as this knowledge becomes a source of meaning for the students life.
