RESUMO

Physicians have specific information needs for clinical practice, which are characterized by the condition of be exact, trustworthy and useful. Given the enormous increase in the medical literature, these professionals have encountered great difficulty in finding the information that could help them treat their patients. In the University Hospital Prof. Edgar Santos, which belongs to the Universidade Federal da Bahia, a survey was conducted with 73 medical residents, trying to assess their information behavior. The population was analyzed using regular survey technique and the critical incident technique through a questionnaire. The results show that the studied group has a need of scientific information; especially in the matters related to drug therapy and diagnosis, and that the need extends to more basic fields. Their preferred approach is to consult the supervisor physician, or another more experienced physician, and maybe some books in their personal collection. The technological resources available to them are underutilized due in part to lack of time, knowledge about how the technology works, and even total ignorance about the existence of such means. The library is almost not visited, and appears to be of no importance to this population. They considered the collections to be scarce and outdated, and they didn?t know what was the role of the librarians. The conclusion is that information professionals have a great opportunity to act in this scenery, as long as they develop their abilities and invest in specific knowledge in this area. The intervention of medical information services has to be directed to the specificities of the medical resident, which are a category in between professionals and students that is not yet well studied.
