RESUMO

The Recife s Fluvio-marine plane, given its complexity, can be considered an interesting region for the development of environmental studies. The currrent study was developed in the two 200 m wide Capibaribe river margins areas, just after it reaches the Recife Flavio-marine Plane and between the Varzea neigthbordhood and the Recife s downtown (UTM coordinates 2950002, 2840000 and 9114000, 9111000). The scope of this MSc dissertation was sought given the lack of works focused on the textural mapping of the Capibaribe River, its sedimentologic characterization and the determination of its actual vulnerability. The lack of information has been a continuous impediment for the development of environmental corrective and preventive tasks. For the development of this work, fluvial channel sediment samples were collected and several technical batimetry and hidrochemical reports consulted. The data were analyzed, tabled and mapped. The use of these data permitted the determination of morpho-sedimentary conditions for the Capibaribe River Channel, as well as determinations of the water quality and the establishment of the vulnerability that the river presents in different segments. Mud (1.346.000 m2) and sand (250.000m2) total cover areas were identified in the channel floor. Two sedimentolofgic facies, sandy and muddy, were identified as well; the former presenting a predominance of coarse grain sized fractions and the latter of medium grain sized fractions. The fractions were moderately (0.5 to 1.00) and poorly (1.00 to 2.00) sorted. The batimetric analyses showed depths less than 5 m. In localized points of the channel, highest depths were found reaching nearly 9 m. Associating the batimetric and sedimentologic data, it can be interpreted that the river underwent rubbishing after the sandy facies covered the muddy ones. Between 1996 and 2002, according to the dissolved oxygen-OD-, the biochemical demand of Oxygen- DBO and the amount of fecal coliforms data obatined by the Companhia Pernambucana de Meio Ambiente (CPRH), the water quality were exposed to the release of domestic and industrial wasted substances. According to the classification elaborated by the Conselho Nacional de Meio Ambiente (CONAMA), the Capibaribe river can be classified as 4 Class river. According to this classification the use of the river is restricted to sailing, landscaping and other similar activities. The vulnerability, given the antropic, natural and physical factors interacting with the river and the demographic, urban and environmental parameters encountered in this study, can be considered as high in the area between Casa Forte and Torre. On the other hand, for the area between Dervy and the Bacia de Santo Amaro, which is the most urbanized area, the vulnerability is high to medium, whereas for the area near the Varzea neighborhood, the vulnerability is low. As a result, it could be verified that the Capibaribe river is highly vulnerable and that it is necessary to undertake remediation tasks for its recovery. It is also necessary to develop land uses reorganization programs for the margin areas. Finally it is recommended a immediate decentralization of the waste substances treatment stations and the collection of effluent in waste substance channels.
