RESUMO

The BLUP method, which is widely used in animal and forestry genetic evaluation can also be applied in the breeding of annual crops. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy and efficiency of the selection of endogamic and topcross families in different populations of popcorn using the BLUP multivariate contemplating these two types of families, univariate BLUP and phenotypic selection. Data capacity expansion and production, from families and their S3 topcrosses in populations of popcorn (Beija-Flor and Viçosa), were analyzed. The progeny tests were evaluated in incomplete blocks in different environments. The multivariate BLUP method showed higher accuracy and efficiency of selection when compared to other methodologies. The efficiency of the multivariate BLUP selection was dependent on the difference between genetic correlations and environmental characteristics. Predict Genetic gains are greater when using information from endogamic and topcross families simultaneously.
