RESUMO

A new procedure for capital cost estimation and the synthesis of utility systems is proposed in this work. The new feature of the procedure is the capability of dealing with variable-temperature utilities simultaneously with constant-temperature utilities. Due to the variable-temperature nature of some utilities (flue gas, for example), not all the heat available can be used for process heating, and some heat has to be rejected to the environment. The new procedure extends the traditional energy targeting linear programming to inc1ude variable-temperature utilities and their restrictions. Both energy and power requirements (and costs) are included in the formulation. The result is the optimal operating cost utility requirement (both level and load) In a further step, the utility system is design to achieve the lowest capital cost, by formulating the utility system design as a superstructure of a gas turbine, boilers, steam levels, steam turbines and heat recovery exchanger. The resulting mixed-integer linear model is solved and the best structure is identified
