RESUMO

The present masters dissertation is a study concerning the homosexual movement during the second half of the nineties. lt was conducted primarily in the city of Sao Paulo. Its intention is to both establish a dialogue with and contrlbute to the studies on social movements and NGOs in the Brazilian context following the return to the democratic regime. It is an attempt to comprehend the internal dynamics of the field in which the homosexual movement is situated and the processes involved in the production of collective identities that have expressed themselves, during the past few years, through a multiplicity of abbreviations and classficatory categories. In order to accomplish these objectives, research recovered the past of the homosexual movement in Sao Paulo, concentrating particularly on the history, organization, internal dynamics, and external relations of a single group denominated CORSA - Cidadania, Orgulho, Respeito, Solidariedade e Amor - Grupo de Conscientização e Emancipação das Minorias Sexuais [CORSA - Citizenship, Pride, Respect, Solidarity and Love - Consciousness, Raising, and Emancipation of Sexual Minorities Group]. Ethnographic field work was conducted on this group ftom 1997 to 1999. The main focus of this dissertationis on the comprehension of the problematic although fundamental processes of constructing collective identities as a means, among other things,of reflecting on the limits and possibilities of collective action
