Structural effects on surfaces within layered crystals

Within a series of derivatives of diundecanoyl peroxide it has been possible to compare a variety of bulk and molecular-level properties among structures that differ only in a region at the interface between crystal lamellae. This region is small enough to allow reliable structure/property correlation. The derivatives involve halogenation and variation of chain length. The properties include crystal structure, melting point (odd-even alternation), thermal expansion, compressibility, and accommodation of interstitial molecules (as measured by the vibrational frequency of CO2 impurity). In general the properties reflect the efficiency of geometric packing at the interface, with halogen substituents exerting additional nongeometric influence.
