RESUMO

Bibliographic materials are made of organic matter and are therefore subject to several reactions in its structure which endanger their lifetime. The conjunction of several factors of physical (temperature, light, humidity) chemical acidity cellulose oxidation) and biological (fungus, bacteria, etc) nature may cause damages to the library materials The study of such causes enables the adoption of measures for the adequate preservation and conservation A defined policy will orient the decision making regarding the conservation and preservation of the collection. This study has tried, through research in the literature, to identify important topics for the development of a policy of preservation and conservation for the Brazilian university libraries It has concluded that the preservation management is a recent area. It includes actions to be developed, recommending the development of policies for the preservation of collections at the national and institutional levels, as a means for the preservation against damages to the hístoric and research bibliographic materials
