RESUMO

An experiment on crossbred steers in grazing lands of Brachiaria decumbens was conducted in the cattle sector of the Animal Science Department at the UFLA, in Lavras â Minas Gerais, to evaluate the use of the mineral protein supplementation in the dry period. Supplements different from one another as to the origin of its protein source: urea (NNP), corn (MIL), cottonseed meal (ALG), corn and cottonseed meal (MIX) and the control (MIN) constituted exclusively of common mineral mixture were utilized. The statistic design utilized was that of randomized blocks, by isolating the animalsâ weight and the means of weight gain were compared by employing the SNK test and significance level of 5% of probability. The animals were weighted weekly over the period of 23/06/04 to 15/09/04. The treatments NNP and ALG afforded daily gains of 702 g/head/d and 671 g/head/d, their being 34% and 28%, respectively, superior to the control treatment. The daily weight gains for the other treatments were 524 g, 433 g and 298 g/head/d for MIN, MIL and MIX, respectively. Considering only weight gain and cost of the supplement, the treatments NNP and ALG afforded incomes 29.7% and 14.6% respectively superior to the control treatment (R$ 0.759/head/d). In face of the results obtained, it follows that the treatment with the protein source coming exclusively from urea provided higher daily weight gains and better income on the occasion of the experiment.
