RESUMO

The physical and chemical characterization of a substance or of a substance mixture is very important, however it does not supply any information related to the toxic potential. The use of assays with organisms, or either, the application of toxicity tests, can overcome this limitation. The Klebsiella oxytoca and E. co/i bacteria had been used as tests-organism in toxicity tests, this last one used for matching purposes. The stimulation/inhibition of the bacterial growth was quantified by the measure of its respirantion of produced CO2 that it was measured by the system of flow injection analysis (FIA), characterized as a simple method that uses a small amost of sample, is sensitive and fast in the determination. The bacteria had been exposed to the antibiotic tetracicline, the heavy metals Hg2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ and to 2 hospital detergents. The results are expressed in terms of EC5o and duplication time (tD). The Klebsiella oxytoca presented higher resistance than E. co/i. The sensitivity found for the Klebsiella oxytoca to metals was Hg2+>Cd2+>CU2+ and for E. coli, Hg2+>CU2+>Cd2+. One concludes that there is a difference in sensitivity between organisms of the same trofic level and the necessity of the battery of assays
