RESUMO
This work investigates the process of institutionalization of the teaching of Modern Languages in Brazil as well as of its configuration as a school subject observing the specific case of the English Language from 1809 to 1890 with the purpose of establishing a periodization related to the main finalities assumed by those Languages in the system of Public Instrucion of the country
