Transtornos mentais comuns e apoio social : estudo de prevalÃncia na Zona da Mata de Pernambuco

RESUMO

Common Mental Disorders are present in the general population, contributing to the risk of more serious mental illnesses. CMD include anxiety, depression and somatoforms disorders, and are associated to the presence of adverse living and working conditions, as well as the absence of social support. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of common mental disorders and the association to social support, demographic factors and socioeconomic conditions, as well as the sensation of happiness and satisfaction with life in the community of Pirauà in Macaparana, Sugar Plantation Zone of the State of Pernambuco in Northeast Brazil. Adult residents over the age of 20 years were interviewed. The prevalence of Common Mental Disorders found was approximately 36%. After adjustments for age, schooling, participations in the work force, satisfactions with living or the sensation of happiness, the multivariate analysis showed that those with low levels of social support have 1,8 times more chances of suffering from CMD than those with higher levels of support
