RESUMO

Surface treatment processes, including electroless plating and electroplating, can be applied to structural ferrous P/M parts to obtain better surface properties such as appearance and corrosion resistance. These finishing processes carried out as a secondary operation are essential for the quality and performance of the product. Electroplating and electroless plating are usually realized on P/M parts as well as on conventional materials. Differences arise because the metal component is porous. New routs were designed for zinc and zinc-nickel electroplating, and also for electroless nickel plating, on sintered samples with density between 5,4 and 6,6 g/cm³ (total porosity level between 31,39 and 16,14%). In order to achieve such results, there were used "classical" sequences applied for conventional materials. The electrolytical sealing was investigated in order to avoid plating solutions responsible for spots and corrosive attacks of P/M compacts to exude. Results showed that, among all the studied processes, electroless nickel deposits appeared to have a greater uniformity layer and a greater capacity to recover longer pores, allowing a higher resistance to corrosion in salt atmosphere
