RESUMO

The following thesis presents as object the role of a journalistic genre the profile in the development of literary journalism, performed by The New Yorker and Realidade magazines. Besides, it aims at understanding why literary journalism chooses the magazines as major media for publishing. The research discusses literary and journalistic genres and emphasizes the features of the profile. It traces the instant when the partition between romance and journalism areas took place, at the time of the rising of realistic novel and journalism on 18th century, in England. It, also, shows how literary journalism set an important tendency on the former area. How New Yorker, from 1925, was considered as a landmark for that kind of genre literary journalism, mainly after the systematization of the profile. How that model was set up in Brazilian journalism, on the 60s and 70s, by Realidade, which elevates reporting news to a new level of production and draws the countrys picture on its coverage. This thesis presents as results, a new approach of the profile and a new journalistic model (the magazine with its differences to newspaper), which are fundamental to understand the time line of literary journalism
