RESUMO

The purpose of this dissertation is to propose and discuss a possible approach to the teaching of reading in English for Brazilian University students in a course of English as a foreign language. The role of reading in the Brazilian educational context and its historical background are considered. A discussion about the learning process and the reading process from a cognitive point of.view is presented to establish the grounds on which the present study has been based. The last part of the dissertation is dedicated to the presentation of the project-approach and to the description and evaluation of this approach in the reading program applied to students of the English Course at the Catholic University of São Paulo. Some conclusions are then presented with respect to the validity of the approach
