RESUMO

The food market has changed. The use of liquid biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuel changed the crop and vegetable oil international markets, adding an important consumer sector of the economy: the energy sector. The rapid growth of biofuels demand and supply has a number of effects on the crop and vegetable oil markets, pressuring upward the agriculture commodities prices. The world concern about food safety is fully justified. However, there are some factors, like the potential of acreagesâs expansion and of the productivityÂs gains of the brazilian agricultural sector, that allow us to believe that the biofuels market development will not create an impact on the food prices in Brazil. In the case of the United States and the European Union, the expansion of the biofuel will shift areas from feedstocks to other crops, impacting not only the feedstocks price but also on the prices of all other crops. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the possible impacts future biofuel developments can have on agricultural commodity markets. As an exploratory study this paper aims to identify possible relationships between the feedstocks prices and the increasing demand for biofuel. This study is focused on countries with an important biofuel markets and those witch are expected to reach significant volumes in the medium term
