2005The main objective of this study is to find out which are the available indicators and what is their utilization for the planning and management of the public hospitals in the greater São Paulo Metropolitan Region - RMGSP. A technical literature review and a survey of documented experiences concerning the use of the indicators for the hospital management enabled the author to identify the best indicators available to the hospital top level executives. Through the study of data existing in the São Paulo State Health Department and from semi-structured interviews conducted with the hospital directors and also information officers, the indicators actually used were identified. Their utilization in the decision making process was analyzed. This research showed that those public hospitals generate a substantial amount of data, although with important gaps, and that many managers overlook this information and do not use it in an adequate way for the institutional strategic planning and control.
