RESUMO

In the last decade (1998-2007) collections were made of biotic (zooplankton) and abiotic (temperature and salinity) in the coastal waters adjacent to Praia Mole, in the Espírito Santo, in order to monitor the potential effects of disposal a heated effluent on the zooplankton community. This study aimed to analyze the data generated by this monitoring by observing the environment and interannual variability of zooplankton community over ten years of sampling. The results indicated a clear distinction between the sample point under the direct influence of industrial effluent, which showed higher average temperature of the water at 2C to the other sites sampled. The zooplankton community also showed significant spatial variation in density and diversity, with lower values recorded in the areas farthest to the disposal industry. With respect to copepods, the most representative taxa of the zooplankton community, results suggest that the genera Acartia, Temora and Paracalanus flags can represent important long-term ecosystem variability in coastal waters. These copepods showed a spatial variability in their populations, consistent with the observed differences in environmental sampling sites, especially those under greater influence of the heated effluent. Collectively, these responses indicate that although species composition may remain constant over the years, the abundance patterns are much more variable and affected by environmental change, only noticeable when viewed on a large timescale.
