RESUMO

This study was done in the favela of Bode, situated in the Southern district of the city of Recife. Fieldwork included ethnography and extensive interviews. The principal social subjects of the research were young men between 18 and 25 years old. The starting point of the research stemmed from the uneasiness generated by the fact that the group on which the research focused â poor, young males â has been seen, predominantly, through a prism of negativity. To a great degree, this is part of a conjunction of several factors, among which may be included: problems linked to the condition of being young; the high rate of present-day urban violence, and the generalized historical âneedâ attributed to members of low-income classes. Breaking away from the logic of the ânegation of valueâ, community members were heard in order to identify young men whose trajectories were considered different, and were positively valued locally. This perspective permitted the use of the concept of âconsiderationâ as a kind of contextualized recognition, constructed during the socialization process. The young menâs trajectories included the diacritical marks of education, work, religion and family relations and were analyzed in light of studies on youth. The narratives brought out clearly the vias used to overcome obstacles they faced because they came from a group which, from a macro-social logic, did not have value. Simultaneously these same narratives showed strategies used to reaffirm local identity. Analytically, in order to understand this double movement of distancing and approximation, the concepts of recognition and âdisâconsideration were employed. The logic of reciprocity contained in the gift also was revealed as a decisive element in the internal dynamics of belonging
