1. Analysis of clinical data and T helper 1/T helper 2 responses in patients with different clinical forms of leprosy
Abstract INTRODUCTION: Currently, there are no laboratory tests or sensitive and specific molecular markers for the early diagnosis of leprosy. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with leprosy and investigate their immunological profile, comparing this with the type of lesion and the presence or absence of a Bacillu

2. Prevalence and factors associated with latent tuberculosis infection in an indigenous population in the Brazilian Amazon
Abstract: INTRODUCTION Recent studies have shown a high incidence and prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in indigenous populations around the World. We aimed to estimate the prevalence and annual risk of infection (ARI) as well as to identify factors associated with LTBI in an indigenous population from the Brazilian Amazon. METHODS We cond

3. Active and latent tuberculosis in prisoners in the Central-West Region of Brazil
Introduction Jailed populations exhibit high rates of tuberculosis (TB) infection and active disease. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed to estimate the prevalence of latent and active TB and to identify factors associated with latent infection in inmates. Results The prevalence of latent TB was 49%, and the prevalence of active TB was 0.4%.

6. Prophylactic Effect of Mycobacterium bovis BCG Vaccination against Osteomyelitis in Children with Mycobacterium ulcerans Disease (Buruli Ulcer)
Mycobacterium ulcerans disease, or Buruli ulcer (BU), causes significant morbidity in West Africa. In 233 consecutive, laboratory-confirmed samples from BU patients in Benin whose Mycobacterium bovis BCG scar status was known, 130 children (<15 years old) and 75 adults had a neonatal BCG vaccination scar. Of 130 children with BCG scars, 10 (7.7%) had osteomy

7. Tuberculin response in preterm infants after BCG vaccination at birth.
A total of 101 preterm infants between 26 and 37 weeks' gestation who received BCG vaccination at birth were evaluated between two and four months after vaccination. Altogether 32% of these infants had no visible BCG scar. All infants were then tested with tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) but only 70 returned for the test to be read 48-72 hours l

8. Association of Interleukin-10 Cytokine Expression Status with HLA Non-DRB1*02 and Mycobacterium bovis BCG Scar-Negative Status in South Indian Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients
HLA DRB1*02 and its subtypes predispose individuals for a far-advanced sputum-positive pulmonary tuberculosis transcending ethnic boundaries. Mycobacterium bovis BCG does not afford the desired protection against adult pulmonary tuberculosis, and a spectrum of immune reactivity exists in controls and hospital contacts. All of these findings have been identif

9. Mycobacterium bovis BCG Scar Status and HLA Class II Alleles Influence Purified Protein Derivative-Specific T-Cell Receptor Vβ Expression in Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients from Southern India
Purified protein derivative (PPD) RT23-recalled T-cell receptor (TCR) Vβ expression was studied in the peripheral blood of 42 pulmonary tuberculosis patients and 44 healthy controls from southern India, a region where tuberculosis is endemic. Forty-eight-hour whole-blood cultures in the presence or absence of PPD-RT23 were set up, and at the end of the cult

10. Mycobacterium bovis BCG Vaccination as Prophylaxis against Mycobacterium ulcerans Osteomyelitis in Buruli Ulcer Disease
Mycobacterium ulcerans disease, or Buruli ulcer (BU), causes significant morbidity in West Africa. Clinically, the disease presents in the skin as either nonulcerative or ulcerative forms and often invades bones either subjacent to the skin lesion (contiguous osteomyelitis) or remote from the skin lesion (metastatic osteomyelitis). Osteomyelitis represents a
