1. Volumes e Curvaturas Médias na Geometria de Finsler: Superfícies Mínimas / Volumes and Means Curvatures in Finsler Geometry: Minimal Surfaces
In Finsler geometry, we have several volume forms, hence various of mean curvature forms. The two best known volumes forms are the Busemann-Hausdorff and Holmes- Thompson volume form. The minimal surface with respect to these volume forms are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surface, respectively. Let (R3; eFb) be a Minkowski space of Randers type with eFb =

2. Tetrahydrobiopterin regulates cyclic GMP-dependent electrogenic Cl- secretion in mouse ileum in vitro.
1. Basal electrogenic Cl- secretion, measured as the short-circuit current (Isc), was variable in ileum removed from tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4)-deficient hph-1 mice and wild-type controls in vitro, although values were not significantly different. 2. The basal nitrite release and mucosal cyclic guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic GMP) production were simila

3. Mutagenesis of the BH3 Domain of BAX Identifies Residues Critical for Dimerization and Killing
The BCL-2 family of proteins is comprised of proapoptotic as well as antiapoptotic members (S. N. Farrow and R. Brown, Curr. Opin. Genet. Dev. 6:45–49, 1996). A prominent death agonist, BAX, forms homodimers and heterodimerizes with multiple antiapoptotic members. Death agonists have an amphipathic α helix, called BH3; however, the initial assessment of B

4. c-Myc Functionally Cooperates with Bax To Induce Apoptosis
c-Myc promotes apoptosis by destabilizing mitochondrial integrity, leading to the release of proapoptotic effectors including holocytochrome c. Candidate mediators of c-Myc in this process are the proapoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family. We show here that fibroblasts lacking Bak remain susceptible to c-Myc-induced apoptosis whereas bax-deficient fibroblasts

5. Microbial Dechlorination of 2,3,5,6-Tetrachlorobiphenyl under Anaerobic Conditions in the Absence of Soil or Sediment
Bacterial enrichment cultures developed with Baltimore Harbor (BH) sediments were found to reductively dechlorinate 2,3,5,6-tetrachlorobiphenyl (2,3,5,6-CB) when incubated in a minimal estuarine medium containing short-chain fatty acids under anaerobic conditions with and without the addition of sediment. Primary enrichment cultures formed both meta and orth

6. Bad-deficient mice develop diffuse large B cell lymphoma
The proapoptotic activity of the “BH3-only” molecule BAD can be differentially regulated by survival factor signaling. Bad-deficient mice lacking both BAD long and BAD short proteins proved viable, and most cell types appeared to develop normally. BAD did not exclusively account for cell death after withdrawal of survival factors, but it was an inter

7. Bad is a BH3 domain-containing protein that forms an inactivating dimer with Bcl-XL.
The Bcl-2 related protein Bad is a promoter of apoptosis and has been shown to dimerize with the anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL. Overexpression of Bad in murine FL5.12 cells demonstrated that the protein not only could abrogate the protective capacity of coexpressed Bcl-XL but could accelerate the apoptotic response to a death signal when it was ex

8. Isolation and structure of a cDNA expressing a mammalian 3-methyladenine-DNA glycosylase.
A cDNA plasmid expression library was constructed from the poly(A)+ mRNA of H4 cells, a rat hepatoma cell line. The library was introduced into Escherichia coli strain BH290 deficient in the repair of 3-methyladenine (3-meAde) residues in DNA. This DNA repair deficiency renders the stain phenotypically sensitive to treatment with alkylating agents. The cDNA

9. Purification and characterization of an active fragment of the LasA protein from Pseudomonas aeruginosa: enhancement of elastase activity.
A 22-kilodalton protein purified from the culture supernatant fraction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (strains PA220 and PAO1) was found to enhance the elastolytic activity of purified P. aeruginosa elastase. N-terminal sequence analysis identified the protein as a fragment of the lasA gene product (P.A. Schad and B.H. Iglewski, J. Bacteriol. 170:2784-2789, 1988)

10. Endogenous NO regulates superoxide production at low oxygen concentrations by modifying the redox state of cytochrome c oxidase
We have investigated in whole cells whether, at low oxygen concentrations ([O2]), endogenous nitric oxide (NO) modulates the redox state of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC), and whether such an action has any signaling consequences. Using a polarographic-and-spectroscopic-coupled system, we monitored redox changes in the ETC cytochromes bH, c

11. The Impact of Multidideoxynucleoside Resistance-Conferring Mutations in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Reverse Transcriptase on Polymerase Fidelity and Error Specificity
Variants of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) that are highly resistant to a number of nucleoside analog drugs have been shown to develop in some patients receiving 2′,3′-dideoxy-3′-azidothymidine therapy in combination with 2′,3′-dideoxycytidine or 2′,3′-dideoxyinosine. The appearance, in the reverse transcriptase (RT), of the Q151M
