1. APPLICABILITY OF NON-FEED REMOVAL PROGRAMS TO INDUCE MOLTING INSTEAD OF THE CONVENTIONAL FEED WITHDRAWAL METHOD IN BROWN LAYING HENS
ABSTRACT This study was conducted to compare the applicability of non-feed removal (NFR) programs to induce molting in brown laying hens by feedusing alfalfa meal and barley grain on molting of instead of feed withdrawal in terms of performance, egg quality and profitability. A total of 240, 75-week-old Hy-Line brown laying hens were randomly divided into th

2. Dietary fiber inclusion as an alternative to Feed Fasting to induce molting in Commercial Layers
The objective of the present experiment was to compare the performance, egg quality and organ morphometrics of commercial layers submitted to alternative forced molting methods using dietary fibers. The experimental period included the phases of molting, rest, and second laying cycle (six periods of 28 days each). In the trial, 320 commercial Isa Brown layer

3. Cytotoxic activity of marine algae against cancerous cells
This paper presents an investigation on the cytotoxic activity in human tumor cell from dichloromethane, chloroform, methanol, ethanol, water extracts, and hexane and chloroform fractions from green, brown and red algae collected at Riacho Doce Beach, north coast of Alagoas, Brazil, against the cancer cells K562 (chronic myelocytic leukemia), HEp-2 (laryngea

4. Germination of Solanum lycocarpum St. Hil seeds: mechanism and regulation / GerminaÃÃo de sementes de lobeira (Solanum lycocarpum St. Hil): Mecanismo e regulaÃÃo
The aims of this study were i) to determine the method to collect fruits at field condition, ii) to define the best germination condition, iii) to characterize morphologically the fruits and morpho-anatomically the seeds, iv) to study the germination mechanism of the seeds, v) to study the control of this process by ABA and vi) to compare the mechanism and r

The application of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) means the utilization of efficient control methods which are ecologically safe and economicaly viable. Therefore, it is extremaly important to gather more information about the possible interactions between the different control agents, aimimg to optimize such a method. 6. Dieta, padrão de atividades e area de vida de um grupo de bugios (Alouatta fusca) na reserva de Santa Genebra, Campinas, SP
The behavior and ecology of a group of six brown howlers were studied weekly during 12 months in the Santa Genebra Reserve (22º49 45"S and 47º06 33"W), near the city of Campinas. The reserve has 250 ha of secondary, mesophitic, semi-deciduous forest. Simultaneously, the phenology of 186 trees of 72 species and 29 families was monitored. The "scan sampling

7. INCORPORAÇÃO DA SAZONALIDADE AO MÉTODO DE BROWN COM CONTROLE ADAPTATIVO / BROWN S ADAPTIVE CONTROL EXPONENTIAL SMOOTHING METHOD INCLUDING SEASONAL COMPONENT
The methods of Brown and Winters are, undoubtedly, the most popular exponential smoothing techniques used nowadays. However, both methods have limitations, such as: Brown s method is applicable only to non-seasonal series and Winters use the linear structure as the only possible model for the trend. A generalization of the smoothing methods in which the limi

8. Blue ghosts: a new method for isolating amber mutants defective in essential genes of Escherichia coli.
We describe a technique which permits an easy screening for amber mutants defective in essential genes of Escherichia coli. Using this approach, we have isolated three amber mutants defective in the rho gene. An extension of the technique allows the detection of ochre mutants and transposon insertions in essential genes.

9. Endocarditis Caused by Culture-Negative Organisms Visible by Brown and Brenn Staining: Utility of PCR and DNA Sequencing for Diagnosis
Two cases of culture-negative endocarditis with cocci seen in valve vegetations are presented. The organisms were identified by molecular analysis using broad-range PCR primers complementary to the 16S rRNA gene, sequencing, and database search using BLAST software. The results and utility of this method are discussed.

10. Improved sodium hydroxide digestion method without homogenization for extraction of gentamicin from renal tissue.
Recovery of gentamicin from renal cortical tissue (assayed by fluorescence polarization immunoassay) was highest (P less than 0.05) when using a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) digestion procedure without homogenization (90.0 +/- 5.4%), followed by homogenization with NaOH digestion (85.8 +/- 7.7%) and homogenization with trichloroacetic acid precipitation (84.4 +/-

11. Evaluation of the Repliscan system for identification of Enterobacteriaceae.
The Repliscan system, a semiautomated method for identifying gram-negative bacilli, was evaluated for its potential usefulness in clinical microbiology laboratories. A total of 1,877 isolates, including 1,712 fermentative and 165 nonfermentative organisms, were tested in parallel with the Repliscan and Enterotube methods of enteric identification. Discrepanc

12. Electron microscopic study of crystals of the Xenopus laevis transcription factor IIIA-5S ribosomal RNA complex.
A novel method has been developed to grow crystals of the Xenopus laevis transcription factor IIIA-5S RNA complex directly on grids for examination by electron microscopy. Microcrystals were examined in negative stain and in thin sections to reveal a hexagonal lattice with unit-cell dimensions a = b = 87.1 +/- 4.4 A and c = 143.8 +/- 12.7 A. Optical diffract
