1. Enhancement of biohydrogen production from starch processing wastewater and further inside its ecosystem disclosed by 16S rDNA sequencing and FISH
ABSTRACT Biohydrogen production from starch processing wastewater in this study resulted the highest yield of 61.75 mL H2/g COD at initial pH 7.0, thermophilic temperature, and iron concentration 800 mg Fe/L. The yield was 2-folded higher than the operation at mesophilic temperature or without iron addition. Cell immobilization by addition of biomaterials (B

2. Zymomonas mobilis IMMOBILIZED ON LOOFA SPONGE AND SUGARCANE BAGASSE FOR LEVAN AND ETHANOL PRODUCTION USING REPEATED BATCH FERMENTATION
Abstract Two experiments were carried out using loofa sponge and sugarcane bagasse as immobilization support. First a 2(5-2) design of experiments was realized with the following independent variables: sucrose concentration; pH; incubation time and agitation. Based on the best results observed in this experiment, the capacity for reuse of the supports in sub

3. Effects of aluminum on the elongation and external morphology of root tips in two maize genotypes
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of toxic levels of aluminum (Al) on the growth and external morphology of root tips in two maize genotypes with differential Al tolerance. The maize genotypes UFVM-100 (Al-sensitive) and UFVM-200 (Al-tolerant) were treated with 0 and 50 mM Al in a 0.5 mM CaCl2 solution at pH 4.5; root elongatio

4. Assessments of the associations of thrombus localization with accompanying disorders, risk factors, D-dimer levels, and the red cell distribution width in pulmonary embolism
OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary embolisms occur as a wide spectrum ranging from clinically asymptomatic thrombi to massive thrombi that lead to cardiogenic shock. The purpose of this study was to determine the associations of thrombus localization with risk factors, accompanying disorders, D-dimer levels and the red blood cell distribution width in patients with pulmo

5. PERFORMANCE OF LOOFA-IMMOBILIZED Rhizopus oryzae IN THE ENZYMATIC PRODUCTION OF BIODIESEL WITH USE OF OLEIC ACID IN n-HEXANE MEDIUM
AbstractThe performance of loofa-immobilized Rhizopus oryzae (as a whole-cell biocatalyst) in the synthesis of methyl oleate was evaluated using oleic acid as a model substrate. The activities of the cell-bound lipase in terms of the esterification and hydrolysis reactions were found to be higher for the immobilized cells as compared with those of the free c

6. Myoglobin entrapment in poly(vinyl alcohol) dense membranes
Our goal in this study was the immobilization of myoglobin in poly(vinyl alcohol) dense membranes. Glutaraldehyde was investigated both as the crosslinking agent, aiming to increase the membrane stability in aqueous medium, and as the vehicle to bind myoglobin and PVA. Reaction and membrane synthesis were carried simultaneously in mild operating conditions i

7. Immobilization of puerarin glycosidase from Microbacterium oxydans CGMCC 1788 increases puerarin transformation efficiency
For immobilization of puerarin glycosidase from Microbacterium oxydans CGMCC 1788 on DEAE-52 cellulose, the optimal amount of enzyme protein was 12 mg protein: 1 g DEAE-52 cellulose; the optimal pH was 6.5; and the optimal immobilization time was 6 hr. The specific activity of immobilized enzyme was 36.67 mU.g-1 carrier with an immobilization yield of 98.87%

8. Enhancement of chitosanase production by cell immobilization of Gongronella sp. JG
Chitosanase production of Gongronella sp. JG cells immobilized in calcium alginate gel and polyurethane foam was compared with that of the free cells, there was a 60% increase in the enzyme yield (2429 U/L) compared to the highest yield obtained from free cells (1513 U/L). The optimal immobilization parameters (concentrations of sodium alginate, calcium chlo

9. Properties of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase in the cell free extract and immobilized extract of Mycobacterium fortuitum
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are carcinogenic compounds which contaminate water and soil, and the enzymes can be used for bioremediation of these environments. This study aimed to evaluate some environmental conditions that affect the production and activity of the catechol 1,2-dioxygenase (C12O) by Mycobacterium fortuitum in the cell free and immo

11. Ethanol fermentation of sugarcane molasses by Zymomonas mobilis MTCC 92 immobilized in Luffa cylindrica L. sponge discs and Ca-alginate matrices
Bio-ethanol production from cane molasses (diluted to 15 % sugar w/v) was studied using the bacterium, Zymomonas mobilis MTCC 92 entrapped in luffa (Luffa cylindrica L.) sponge discs and Ca-alginate gel beads as the immobilizing matrices. At the end of 96 h fermentation, the final ethanol concentrations were 58.7 ± 0.09 and 59.1 ± 0.08 g/l molasses with lu

12. Measuring bacterial cells size with AFM
Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) can be used to obtain high-resolution topographical images of bacteria revealing surface details and cell integrity. During scanning however, the interactions between the AFM probe and the membrane results in distortion of the images. Such distortions or artifacts are the result of geometrical effects related to bacterial cell h
