1. Retrospective Evaluation of Platelet-Leukocyte Indices and Cardiac Surgical Outcomes in Acyanotic Heart Disease Patients with Pulmonary Hypertension (REPLICA-PH)
Abstract Introduction: Acyanotic congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) are prone to postoperative complications, and characterization of the risk profile continues to fail in identifying inflammatory predilection. Our objective is to investigate the role of platelet-leukocyte indices (neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio [NLR], pl

2. Symptomatic Aortic Paravalvular Leak: Percutaneous Treatment with Amplatzer Vascular Plug III Device as an Alternative to Surgery
Abstract A significant prosthetic paravalvular leak is an uncommon and severe postsurgical complication correlated to the occurrence of congestive heart failure and hemolytic anemia. Percutaneous treatment has become an attractive and effective proposal to relieve symptoms and reduce complications in patients whose high rate of morbidity/mortality precludes

3. Chronic Atrial Fibrillation Ablation with Harmonic Scalpel during Mitral Valve Surgery
Abstract Objective To evaluate surgical treatment of chronic atrial fibrillation with ultrasound in patients with mitral valve disease, considering preoperative clinical characteristics of patients undergoing surgical procedure and follow-up in the immediate postoperative period, in hospital and up to 60 months after discharge. Methods: We studied 100 pati

4. Fatal pulmonary embolism in hospitalized patients: a large autopsy-based matched case-control study
OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary embolism is an underdiagnosed major cause of death for hospitalized patients. The objective of this study was to identify the conditions associated with fatal pulmonary embolism in this population. METHODS: A total of 13,074 autopsy records were evaluated in a case-control study. Patients were matched by age, sex, and year of death, a

5. Surgical myocardial revascularization of patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy and severe left ventricular disfunction
OBJECTIVE: To determine long-term survival, identify preoperative factors predictive of a favorable outcome, and assess functional improvement after coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with advanced left ventricular dysfunction. METHODS: Between 1995 and 2001, 244 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting and had a preoperative left vent

6. Efficacy of aneurysmectomy in patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction: favorable short-and long-term results in ischemic cardiomyopathy
INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to (1) identify the functional results after aneurysm surgery in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy and (2) identify predictors of favorable outcomes. METHODS AND MATERIAL: Patients (n = 169) with angiographic left ventricular ejection fraction of 22±5% underwent aneurysm surgery and were prospectively followed

7. Avaliação do emprego clínico do dispositivo de assistência ventricular InCor como ponte para o transplante cardíaco / Evaluation of the clinical application of the ventricular assist device type Incor as a bridge to cardiac transplantation

8. Mitral valve replacement with complete chordae tendinae preservation in end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy. / Substituição da valva mitral com tração e fixação dos músculos papilares em pacientes com miocardiopatia dilatada
Background. We aimed to evaluate mitral valve replacement results and a new technique for complete chordae tendineae adjustment for left ventricular remodeling. Methods. Twenty end-stage idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy patients with severe functional mitral valve regurgitation underwent mitral valve replacement from July 2000 to December 2003. Three (15%)

9. VENTRICULECTOMIA PARCIAL MEDIANTE INFLOW OCCLUSION EM CÃES / PARTIAL VENTRICULECTOMIY BY INFLOW OCCLUSION IN DOGS
The reduction of the systolic function of the left ventricle in patients with congestive heart failure is related with increased ventricular volume. Despite of the advances in conservative treatments the prognosis is guarded with a high mortality rate. This work proposed the development of a surgical protocol of cardiac chamber reduction through partial vent

10. Neonate Aortic Stenosis: Importance of Myocardial Perfusion in Prognosis
OBJECTIVE: To analyze our experience with percutaneous aortic balloon valvuloplasty in newborn infants with aortic stenosis, emphasizing the extraordinary importance of myocardial perfusion.METHODS: Over a 10-year-period, 21 neonates underwent percutaneous aortic balloon valvuloplasty. Age ranged from 2 to 27 days, weight ranged from 2.2 to 4.1 kg and 19 wer

11. Coronary artery disease in patients dying from cardiogenic shock or congestive heart failure in the setting of acute myocardial infarction.
Pathological findings in the heart and particularly in the coronary arteries are reported from 70 patients dying from pump failure after acute myocardial infarction. Fifty of the patients had died in cardiogenic shock, the remainder from refractory congestive heart failure. Three-vessel disease (greater than or equal to 75% occlusion) was present in 68 per c

12. Efficacy and dosage of enalapril in congenital and acquired heart disease.
In a tertiary referral centre 63 patients underwent 67 treatment periods with enalapril. The median age was 5.4 months. All children had signs of heart failure: congestive cardiac failure with breathlessness at rest was present in 88%. Haemodynamic groups were left-to-right shunt (n = 15), impaired ventricular function (n = 14), after cardiac surgery (n = 23
