1. Pre-TAI protocol strategies to increase reproductive efficiency in beef and dairy cows
Abstract Ovulation synchronization protocols are well established in beef and dairy cows. However, the protocol response rate is around 70-90%. In beef cows, factors such as inadequate nutrition and calf presence negatively impact the response of progesterone (P4)/estradiol-based ovulation synchronization protocols by interfering with GnRH release and conseq

2. Association between gestation length and lactation performance, lactation curve, calf birth weight and dystocia in Holstein dairy cows in Iran
Abstract In this study, 252,798 lactations on 108,077 cows in 433 herds were used to determine the association between gestation length (GL) and lactation performance, lactation curve, calf birth weight and dystocia in Holstein dairy cows in Iran. The GL averaged 278.1 ± 5.41 d, was categorized as short (SGL; at 1 SD below the population mean), average (AGL

3. Evaluation of pulmonary maturity in bovine neonates: analysis of amniotic fluid

4. Effect of feeding heat-treated and unheated colostrum on immunoglobulin G absorption, health and performance of neonatal Holstein dairy calves
ABSTRACT. First colostrum is an important source of nutrients and immune factors which are necessary for calves in the first weeks of life. Despite these benefits, colostrum can also represent one of the earliest potential exposures of dairy calves to infectious agents which these patogens can act directly on growth and cause diseases such as scours or septi

5. Performance, rumen development, and carcass traits of male calves fed starter concentrate with crude glycerin
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to assess the effects of including crude glycerin in the diet on intake, performance, rumen development, and carcass traits of dairy crossbred veal calves fed starter concentrate containing 0, 80, 160, and 240 g kg−1 crude glycerin. Twenty-eight calves with an average weight of 38.03±6.7 kg and five days of age wer

6. A survey of dairy calf management practices in some producing regions in Brazil
ABSTRACTThis study aimed to characterize the Brazilian dairy calves raising systems through a survey of major aspects of animal husbandry. One hundred seventy-nine producers and/or technicians were interviewed. The questionnaire addressed issues related to the management of the dry cow and the newborn, nutritional management of the liquid-feeding phase, hous

7. Methodology to estimate the cost of delayed pregnancy for dairy cows. An example for Argentina
The objectives of the present study were to develop a methodology that implies the use of an electronic spreadsheet to calculate the financial losses of involuntary days open (IDO; every additional day open beyond an optimal calving-to-conception interval) and to show an example of the cost of days open using the proposed methodology. The costs accounted for

8. Models of protein and amino acid requirements for cattle
Protein supply and requirements by ruminants have been studied for more than a century. These studies led to the accumulation of lots of scientific information about digestion and metabolism of protein by ruminants as well as the characterization of the dietary protein in order to maximize animal performance. During the 1980s and 1990s, when computers became

9. Incorporation of lactations with non-conventional drying-off causes in genetic evaluation of Gyr dairy cattle
Test-day records of milk yields from the first three lactations were used to verify consequences of incorporation of lactation with non-conventional drying-off causes in genetic evaluation of Gyr dairy cattle. The first file (File1) was composed of test-day records of lactations with conventional drying-off causes. In the second file (File2), the test-day re

10. Evaluation of mannan-oligosaccharides offered in milk replacers or calf starters and their effect on performance and rumen development of dairy calves
The objective of this study was to evaluate the route of administration of mannan-oligosaccharides in the diet of dairy calves and their effects on performance and plasma parameters indicative of rumen development. Following birth, twenty-four male Holstein calves were used in a completely randomized design and assigned to the following treatments: Control;

11. Distribution and abundance of natural parasitoid (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) populations of house flies and stable flies (Diptera: Muscidae) at the University of Florida Dairy Research Unit
From September 2001 through September 2002, house fly and stable fly pupae were collected weekly from three fly habitats at the University of Florida Research dairy in northcentral Florida and evaluated for parasitism. Varying parasitism percentages were observed throughout the study but they were not affected by temperature, precipitation or fly abundance.

12. Efeitos da restrição alimentar e da somatotropina bovina recombinante sobre parâmetros do metabolismo energético, protéico, enzimático e mineral de novilhas leiteiras no pré-parto / Effect of feed restriction and of recombinant bovine somatotropin on energetic, proteic, enzymatic and mineral metabolic parameters of prepartum dairy heifers
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of feed restriction and of recombinant bovine somatotropin (bST) on energetic, proteic, enzymatic and mineral metabolic parameters of prepartum dairy heifers. Forty four pregnant heifers were used for this study. The experimental period ranged from 35 days prepartum to partum and from 60 days to 160 postpartu
