1. O desempenho da tomografia computadorizada na quantificação da esteatose hepática / The performance of computed tomography in quantifying hepatic steatosis
INTRODUCTION: Hepatic steatosis is a metabolic disease characterized by accumulated fat in hepatocytes. Among its causes, chronic alcoholism, obesity, type II diabetes mellitus and syndrome metabolic. The interest in detecting and quantifying hepatic steatosis has grown in the past years due to higher prevalence and advances in hepatic surgical technical. Qu

2. Efeitos da cirurgia de Fobi-Capella na doença hepática gordurosa não alcoólica (DHGNA): estudo prospectivo de dois anos / Effects of bariatric surgery (Fobi-Capella) in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): prospective study of 2 years
Background: The incidence of obesity is increasing in western countries at an alarming rate. The National Center for Health Statistics of United Stated estimated in adult population 61% the prevalence of overweight or obesity, and 30% has obesity, and 5 to 6% were classified in severe obesity. In Brazil, the Ministry of Health reported 32.9% the prevalence o

3. Hepatic alterations in severely obese patients: clinical-laboratory and histopatological evaluations before surgical treatment of obesity / "Alterações hepáticas em grandes obesos: avaliações clínico-laboratoriais e histopatológicas antes do tratamento cirúrgico da obesidade"
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has been associated with obesity. Determine prevalence of NAFLD/NASH and metabolic syndrome (MS) in severe obesity; define clinical predictor of steatohepatitis; establish histological criteria necessary to diagnose NASH. Evaluation of 325 patients submitted to bariatric surgery

4. ESTUDO RETROSPECTIVO DE LESÕES HEPÁTICAS CRÔNICAS EM CÃES / CHRONIC HEPATIC LESIONS OF DOGS. A retrospective study
The necropsy reports of 4899 dogs necropsied at the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria from 1964 to 2003 were reviewed in search of chronic hepatic lesions. Three hundred and six lesions (6,2%) were found and were classified as inflammatory (4,2%), degenerative (26,8%), circulatory (23,2%) and neoplastic (45,8%). Neopl

5. Hepatic function and lipid profile assessment in puerperal and post-puerperal periods and their relationship with reproductive disorders in Holstein cows raised in the State of São Paulo / Avaliação da função hepática e do lipidograma no período puerperal e pós-puerperal e suas inter-relações com os distúrbios reprodutivos de fêmeas bovinas da raça Holandesa, criadas no Estado de São Paulo
Aiming to assess the influence of physiological puerperium and post-puerperal phase on the hepatic function and lipid profile of health cows, as well as to assess their connection with some reproductive disorders of early puerperium (Acute postpartum endometritis and placental retention); late puerperium (genital catarrhal discharges level I and II, and leve

6. Fibrose e outras lesÃes hepÃticas em camundongos isogÃnicos ("inbred") desnutridos e eutrÃficos, infectados com Schistosoma mansoni / Fibrosis and other hepatic lesions in undernourished and well-nourished inbred mice infected with
In chronic schistosomiasis mansoni, periovular granulomas and periportal fibrosis are the most important hepatic lesions, besides vascular changes that lead to hypertension within the portal venous system. Well-nourished Swiss outbred mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni develop lesions that mimick those found in advanced clinical forms of human intestinal

7. Microarray analysis of hepatic gene expression identifies new genes involved in steatotic liver
Trans-10, cis-12-conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)-enriched diets promote fatty liver in mice, while cis-9, trans-11-CLA ameliorates this effect, suggesting regulation of multiple genes. To test this hypothesis, apoE-deficient mice were fed a Western-type diet enriched with linoleic acid isomers, and their hepatic gene expression was analyzed with DNA microarra

8. Defective fatty acid uptake modulates insulin responsiveness and metabolic responses to diet in CD36-null mice
Deficiency of the membrane protein FAT/CD36 causes a marked defect in fatty acid uptake by various tissues and is genetically linked to insulin resistance in rats and humans. Here, we examined insulin responsiveness of CD36–/– mice. When fed a diet high in complex carbohydrates and low (5%) in fat, these animals cleared glucose faster than the wild-type.

9. The lethal effects of transplantation of Socs1-/- bone marrow cells into irradiated adult syngeneic recipients
Injection of neonatal bone marrow cells from mice lacking the gene encoding suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) into irradiated syngeneic 129/Sv or C57BL/6 mice led to a decreased survival, more rapidly occurring in 129/Sv than in C57BL/6 mice. Moribund mice did not exhibit the acute or chronic diseases developed by Socs1-/- mice but developed a

10. High levels of retinal membrane docosahexaenoic acid increase susceptibility to stress-induced degenerations⃞
The fat-1 gene cloned from C. elegans encodes an n-3 fatty acid desaturase that converts n-6 to n-3 PUFA. Mice carrying the fat-1 transgene and wild-type controls were fed an n-3-deficient/n-6-enriched diet [fat-1- safflower oil (SFO) and wt-SFO, respectively]. Fatty acid profiles of rod outer segments (ROS), cerebellum, plasma, and liver demonstrated signif

11. Insulinlike growth factor II expression and oval cell proliferation associated with hepatocarcinogenesis in woodchuck hepatitis virus carriers.
Insulinlike growth factor II (IGF-II) is a highly mitogenic fetal growth factor suspected of regulating the growth of a wide spectrum of tissues via an autocrine or paracrine mode of action or both. High steady-state levels of IGF-II RNA were detected in 45% of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) arising from woodchuck livers with persistent woodchuck hepatitis
