1. Productive Performance, Egg Characteristics and Hatching Traits of Three Chicken Genotypes under Free-Range, Semi-Intensive, and Intensive Housing Systems
ABSTRACT The present study aimed at evaluating the effect of housing system on the live performance, egg quality, and hatching traits of three dual-purpose chicken genotypes. In total, 180 birds, comprising 48 pullets and 12 cockerels from each of three genotypes, were evaluated during the production phase (27-46 weeks). For this, 144 pullets and 36 cockerel

2. Disinfection of Fertile Eggs of Free-Range Poultry with Essential Oils

3. Welfare-friendly Products: availability, labeling and opinion of retailers in Curitiba, Southern Brazil,
Abstract: The market for welfare-friendly products (WFP) is increasing worldwide; however, there is a lack of information on this topic in Brazil. We investigated availability, product information and opinion of retailers about WFP in Curitiba, Southern Brazil. We visited 36 strategically located retailers, conducting product evaluation and interviews with m

4. Effects of Hen Age and Egg Weight Class on the Hatchability of Free Range Indigenous Chicken Eggs
ABSTRACT In total, 806 eggs of free-range Hassawi indigenous chickens were collected from local farm in Saudi Arabia. Eggs were weekly collected for 11 weeks. Initial egg weight (IEW) was recorded, and eggs were graded into four classes (A: 35-40 g, B: 40-45 g, C: 45-50 g, and D: 50-55 g). Eggs were stored for seven days at 75-80% relative humidity and 14-16

5. Eggshell apex abnormalities in a free-range hen farm with mycoplasma synoviae and infectious bronchitis virus in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil
A farm with 3,000 free-range hens between 24 and 65 weeks of age was investigated. These hens were separated in small flocks of 400 to 700 birds, presenting 10 to 23% egg production reduction. Twenty serum samples were collected during the period of drop in egg production and three weeks later for the investigation of Mycoplasma synoviae (MS), M. galliseptic

6. Lead poisoning mortality in wild passeriformes and its detection in free-range chicken eggs in Southern Minas Gerais, Brazil
The mortality of passerines native of Southern Minas Gerais, Brazil, in August 2006 and the examination of sentinel free-range chicken eggs in August 2007 in an area surrounding a car battery lead smelter plant is described. The high levels of lead, as detected in the passerines (4.80-12.74 mg/kg) at the onset of mortality and at the follow-up sampling of th

8. Chemical characterization and antioxidant and citotoxic activities from alecrim propolis / Análise química e atividades antioxidante e citotóxica de amostras de própolis de alecrim
Propolis is a complex mixture of substances derived from bee products and plant resins. Propolis color and texture vary widely and chemical composition is dependent on the hive locality. Bees use propolis to seal openings in the hive and to line it internally, which help keeping the environment aseptic. Propolis properties in medicine has been known since an

9. In vitro characterization and in vivo properties of Salmonellae lytic bacteriophages isolated from free-range layers
Occurrence of food poisoning related to Salmonella-contaminated eggs and chicken meat has been frequent in humans. Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) and Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) are included among the most important paratyphoid salmonellae associated with chicken meat and eggs. Elimination of Salmonella at the pre-harvest stage can play a significant role in pr

10. Degradation of the proto-oncogene product p39mos is not necessary for cyclin proteolysis and exit from meiotic metaphase: requirement for a Ca(2+)-calmodulin dependent event.
Exit from M phase, which requires cyclin degradation, is prevented from occurring in unfertilized eggs of vertebrates arrested at second meiotic metaphase due to a cytostatic factor recently identified as p39mos, the product of the proto-oncogene c-mos. Calpain can destroy both p39mos and cyclin in vitro in extracts prepared from metaphase-arrested Xenopus e

11. Chemical defense against predation in an insect egg
The larva of the green lacewing (Ceraeochrysa cubana) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) is a natural predator of eggs of Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae), a moth that sequesters pyrrolizidine alkaloids from its larval foodplant (Fabaceae, Crotalaria spp.). Utetheisa eggs are ordinarily endowed with the alkaloid. Alkaloid-free Utetheisa eggs, produced expe

12. Periodic increase of cytoplasmic free calcium in fertilized hamster eggs measured with calcium-sensitive electrodes.
The hamster egg at fertilization shows transient, periodic hyperpolarizing responses due to a Ca2+-activated K+ conductance. The suggested increase of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) was measured with Ca2+-sensitive microelectrodes in combination with the voltage-clamp technique. Calculated values of the basal [Ca2+]i before fertilization aver
