1. Variation in the distribution of Corbicula species (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Corbiculidae) after 25 years of its introduction in the Río de la Plata, Argentina
ABSTRACT In 1981, Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774) and C. largillierti (Philippi, 1844) were recorded at the Río de la Plata River. During the 1980’s, C. largillierti was found on a continuous fringe in the shore of that river, while C. fluminea was only found North of Buenos Aires’ harbor. Ten years later, C. fluminea spread to Punta Indio, while C.

2. Endophytic Microbiota Associated with the Root Tips and Leaves of Baccharis dracunculifolia
ABSTRACT Although endophytic bacteria impact the health, and ultimately the fitness, of their hosts, our understanding of the diversity of endophytic species remains limited. Here we report on the endophytic microbiota inhabiting the roots, healthy leaves and leaves attacked by a gall-inducing insect of Baccharis dracunculifolia, a species of major economic

This work presents the results of a high-resolution seismic reflection data survey carried out in the Patos lagoon inlet, near Rio Grande the southernmost harbor of Brazil. The analysis of the reflection patterns reveals the presence of transgressive/regressive barrier structures and beach/foredune-ridges. The mapping of these barrier structures allows a bet

5. ESTUDOS GENÉTICOS SOBRE A VIRULÊNCIA DE Escherichia coli ENTEROAGREGATIVA ATÍPICA / Genetic studies on the virulence of atypical enteroaggregative Escherichia coli.
Escherichia coli enteroaggregative (EAEC) is emerging as a significant diarrheal pathogen. EAEC is defined by its characteristic stacked brick aggregative adherence (AA) pattern of adherence to HEp-2 cells. Most EAEC strains harbor a 60 to 65-MDa virulence plasmid (pAA). A 1-Kb fragment of pAA, referred to as the AA probe or CVD432, has been widely used for

6. Comparação entre desempenhos de estacas metálicas tubadas de ponta aberta e fechada na Baixada Santista. / Comparison between the behavior of steel pipe piles with opened and closed ends at the Santos Coastal Plain.
This MSc thesis dealt with the plug phenomenon in open-ended-toes steel pipe piles. This phenomenon occurs when, in the driving process of an open-ended toe pile, the soil that gets into its base alters its behavior, making it similar to one of a close-ended toe under static load and, sometimes, even under dynamic load. Many bored piles, installed with the p

7. Relative Age of Proviral Porcine Endogenous Retrovirus Sequences in Sus scrofa Based on the Molecular Clock Hypothesis
Porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERV) are discussed as putative infectious agents in xenotransplantation. PERV classes A, B, and C harbor different envelope proteins. Two different types of long terminal repeat (LTR) structures exist, of which both are present only in PERV-A. One type of LTR contains a distinct repeat structure in U3, while the other is rep

8. Yarrowia lipolytica Cells Mutant for the PEX24 Gene Encoding a Peroxisomal Membrane Peroxin Mislocalize Peroxisomal Proteins and Accumulate Membrane Structures Containing Both Peroxisomal Matrix and Membrane Proteins
Peroxins are proteins required for peroxisome assembly and are encoded by the PEX genes. Functional complementation of the oleic acid–nonutilizing strain mut1-1 of the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica has identified the novel gene, PEX24. PEX24 encodes Pex24p, a protein of 550 amino acids (61,100 Da). Pex24p is an integral membrane protein of peroxisomes that exh

9. The Ras GTPase-activating-protein-related human protein IQGAP2 harbors a potential actin binding domain and interacts with calmodulin and Rho family GTPases.
We previously described IQGAP1 as a human protein related to a putative Ras GTPase-activating protein (RasGAP) from the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Here we report the identification of a liver-specific human protein that is 62% identical to IQGAP1. Like IQGAP1, the novel IQGAP2 protein harbors an N-terminal calponin homology motif which function

10. Principles of quasi-equivalence and Euclidean geometry govern the assembly of cubic and dodecahedral cores of pyruvate dehydrogenase complexes
The pyruvate dehydrogenase multienzyme complex (Mr of 5–10 million) is assembled around a structural core formed of multiple copies of dihydrolipoyl acetyltransferase (E2p), which exhibits the shape of either a cube or a dodecahedron, depending on the source. The crystal structures of the 60-meric dihydrolipoyl acyltransferase cores of Bacillus stear

11. U1 small nuclear RNA and spliceosomal introns in Euglena gracilis
In the flagellated protozoon Euglena gracilis, characterized nuclear genes harbor atypical introns that usually are flanked by short repeats, adopt complex secondary structures in pre-mRNA, and do not obey the GT-AG rule of conventional cis-spliced introns. In the nuclear fibrillarin gene of E. gracilis, we have identified three spliceosomal-type introns tha

12. Chromosomal integration of plasmid DNA by homologous recombination in Enterococcus faecalis and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis hosts harboring Tn919.
Integration of pCI192, a pBR322-derived vector plasmid containing homology to the chromosomally located conjugative transposon Tn919 was observed in two strains that harbor Tn919, namely, Enterococcus faecalis GF590 and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis CH919. Hybridization analysis indicated that single-copy integration of the plasmid had occurred at low fre
