1. Caracterização da diversidade de fungos filamentosos associados a esponjas marinhas e avaliação da produção de lacase = : Diversity of filamentous fungi associated with marine sponges and evaluation of laccase production / Diversity of filamentous fungi associated with marine sponges and evaluation of laccase production
The ocean represents a promissing habitat in the search for new microorganisms, which may have the ability to produce enzymes of industrial interests different from that produced by their terrestrial counterparts. In this context, two samples of the marine sponge Dragmacidon reticulatum were collected on northern coast of São Paulo State, aiming at the char

2. Analysis of criteria for closely-spaced parallel runway approaches applied to a multiple airport system.
In order to increase arrival rates at many of today s heavily congested airports, simultaneous approaches are conducted on parallel runways. For many years, the FAA has permitted simultaneous independent instrument approach operations only for those parallel runways with a minimum separation of 4300 feet. Nowadays, new criteria have been developed to increas

3. Hazard Level Assessment between two aircrafts on Ultra Closely Spaced Parallel Approaches (UCSPA) scenario.

4. Diversity Arrays: a solid state technology for sequence information independent genotyping
Here we present the successful application of the microarray technology platform to the analysis of DNA polymorphisms. Using the rice genome as a model, we demonstrate the potential of a high-throughput genome analysis method called Diversity Array Technology, DArT‘. In the format presented here the technology is assaying for the presence (or amount) o

5. Distribution of sulfate-reducing bacteria in a stratified fjord (Mariager Fjord, Denmark) as evaluated by most-probable-number counts and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of PCR-amplified ribosomal DNA fragments.
The sulfate-reducing bacterial populations of a stratified marine water column, Mariager Fjord, Denmark, were investigated by molecular and culture-dependent approaches in parallel. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA and DNA encoding rRNA (rDNA) isolated from the water column indicated specific bacterial populations in d

6. Strand-invasion of duplex DNA by peptide nucleic acid oligomers.
Polyamide oligomers, termed peptide nucleic acids (PNAs), bind with high affinity to both DNA and RNA and offer both antisense and antigene approaches for regulating gene expression. When a PNA binds to a complementary sequence in a double-stranded DNA, one strand of the duplex is displaced, and a stable D-loop is formed. Unlike oligodeoxynucleotides for whi

7. Prospects for atherosclerosis regression through increase in high‐density lipoprotein and other emerging therapeutic targets
In a process often seen as progressive and irreversible, deposition and retention of lipoproteins and the consequent inflammatory reaction result in the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques from an early age. However, striking effects observed in experimental models support the concept that atherosclerosis can regress. This is often accompanied by changes

8. Dissection of a Complex Phenotype by Functional Genomics Reveals Roles for the Yeast Cyclin-Dependent Protein Kinase Pho85 in Stress Adaptation and Cell Integrity
Cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) are key regulators of the cell division cycle. Pho85 is a multifunctional Cdk in budding yeast involved in aspects of metabolism, the cell cycle, cell polarity, and gene expression. Consistent with a broad spectrum of functions, Pho85 associates with a family of 10 cyclins and deletion of PHO85 causes a pleiotropic phenotype.

9. Elevation of cytosolic calcium precedes anoxic gene expression in maize suspension-cultured cells.
Based on pharmacological evidence, we previously proposed that intracellular Ca2+ mediates the perception of O2 deprivation in maize seedlings. Herein, using fluorescence imaging and photometry of Ca2+ in maize suspension-cultured cells, the proposal was further investigated. Two complementary approaches were taken: (1) real time analysis of anoxia-induced c

10. Acetylcholine and ATP are coreleased from the electromotor nerve terminals of Narcine brasiliensis by an exocytotic mechanism.
Although the exocytotic mechanism for quantal acetylcholine (ACh) release has been widely accepted for many years, it has repeatedly been challenged by reports that ACh released upon stimulation originates from the cytosol rather than synaptic vesicles. In this report, two independent experimental approaches were taken to establish the source of ACh released

11. A series of prostaglandin F2-like compounds are produced in vivo in humans by a non-cyclooxygenase, free radical-catalyzed mechanism.
Increasing attention has focused on the role of free radicals derived from oxygen in the pathophysiology of a wide variety of disorders. One of the well-recognized targets of free radical-induced injury is peroxidation of lipids. Using a variety of approaches, we have found that a series of prostaglandin F2-like compounds are produced in vivo in humans by a
