1. Genetic parameters and selection of macaw palm (Acrocomia aculeata) accessions: an alternative crop for biofuels
Abstract This study aimed to estimate the parameters related to the genetic control of the physical characteristics of the fruits, oil content, and oil yield, and to proceed with the selection of macaw palm accessions. Forty-four macaw palm accessions of the active germplasm collection of the Federal University of Viçosa were collected for the evaluation of

2. Spatial distribution of leprosy in Brazil: a literature review
Abstract Leprosy remains a public health problem in developing countries. Among communicable diseases, it is one of the leading causes of permanent disability. Brazil had not reached the goal of reducing cases to less than 1 per 10,000 population. This study aimed to analyze the spatial distribution of leprosy cases in Brazil, using a literature review. The

3. Spatial distribution of trachoma cases in the City of Bauru, State of São Paulo, Brazil, detected in 2006: defining key areas for improvement of health resources
IntroductionThe objective of this study was to analyze the spatial behavior of the occurrence of trachoma cases detected in the City of Bauru, State of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2006 in order to use the information collected to set priority areas for optimization of health resources.Methodsthe trachoma cases identified in 2006 were georeferenced. The data evalu

4. In situ and in vitro degradation kinetics and prediction of the digestible neutral detergent fiber of agricultural and agro-industrial byproducts
The objective of this study was to evaluate the in situ and in vitro degradation kinetics and to predict the digestible neutral detergent fiber (dNDF) from the incubation times; in situ and in vitro degradation kinetic parameters; and equations fitted for agricultural and agro-industrial byproducts. Byproducts from pineapple, cocoa, palm kernel, corn gluten

5. Estimadores do tipo núcleo para a densidade de transição de uma cadeia de markov com espaço de estados geral
In this work, we studied the strong consistency for a class of estimates for a transition density of a Markov chain with general state space E Rd. The strong ergodicity of the estimates for the density transition is obtained from the strong consistency of the kernel estimates for both the marginal density p(:) of the chain and the joint density q(:; :). In t

7. Relationship of Maize Testers Selection and their Genetic Divergences / Relações entre seleção de testadores de milho e suas divergências genéticas
The objectives of this study were to relate the magnitudes of the correlation between testcrosses with the genetic divergences of the testers in order to verify if the genetic similarity of the testers could allow the reduction of testers, and if the level of selection intensity that should be applied is also a function of the genetic similarity of the teste

8. Hardy-Weinberg Testing for Continuous Data
Estimation of allelic and genotypic distributions for continuous data using kernel density estimation is discussed and illustrated for some variable number of tandem repeat data. These kernel density estimates provide a useful representation of data when only some of the many variants at a locus are present in a sample. Two Hardy-Weinberg test procedures are

9. Nonlinear system theory: Another look at dependence
Based on the nonlinear system theory, we introduce previously undescribed dependence measures for stationary causal processes. Our physical and predictive dependence measures quantify the degree of dependence of outputs on inputs in physical systems. The proposed dependence measures provide a natural framework for a limit theory for stationary processes. In

10. In Vitro Sugar Transport in Zea mays L. Kernels 1: I. Characteristics of Sugar Absorption and Metabolism by Developing Maize Endosperm
Short-term transport studies were conducted using excised whole Zea mays kernels incubated in buffered solutions containing radiolabeled sugars. Following incubation, endosperms were removed and rates of net 14C-sugar uptake were determined. Endogenous sugar gradients of the kernel were estimated by measuring sugar concentrations in cell sap collected from t

11. Nonvascular, Symplasmic Diffusion of Sucrose Cannot Satisfy the Carbon Demands of Growth in the Primary Root Tip of Zea mays L.
Nonvascular, symplasmic transport of sucrose (Suc) was investigated theoretically in the primary root tip of maize (Zea mays L. cv WF9 x Mo 17) seedlings. Symplasmic diffusion has been assumed to be the mechanism of transport of Suc to cells in the root apical meristem (R.T. Giaquinta, W. Lin, N.L. Sadler, V.R. Franceschi [1983] Plant Physiol 72: 362-367), w
