2. Integral field spectroscopy of the Homunculus nebula / Espectroscopia de campo integral do Homúnculo de eta Carinae
The Homunculus nebula was mapped using the integral field technique and the results are presented in this dissertation. The observations were obtained in the J band in the range from 10620 Å to 12960 Å using the CIRPASS s IFU, which contains 499 hexagonal lenses. The spatial sampling is 0,25"/lens and the spectral resolution, set to R=3200. The [Fe II]

3. Lobucavir is phosphorylated in human cytomegalovirus-infected and -uninfected cells and inhibits the viral DNA polymerase.
Lobucavir (LBV) is a deoxyguanine nucleoside analog with broad-spectrum antiviral activity. LBV was previously shown to inhibit herpes simplex virus (HSV) DNA polymerase after phosphorylation by the HSV thymidine kinase. Here we determined the mechanism of action of LBV against human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). LBV inhibited HCMV DNA synthesis to a degree compar

4. Isolation of Buttiauxella gaviniae from a Spinal Cord Patient with Urinary Bladder Pathology
A gram-negative Buttiauxella gaviniae-like organism (LBV449) was isolated from a urine sample of a patient suffering from urine bladder pathology and neurological problems. The isolate was positive for adonitol fermentation and l-arginine dihydrolase and negative for melibiose and l-ornithine decarboxylase. The API 20E code was 3004113. Retrospectively, anot

5. Hydroxyurea Potentiates the Antiherpesvirus Activities of Purine and Pyrimidine Nucleoside and Nucleoside Phosphonate Analogs
Hydroxyurea has been shown to potentiate the anti-human immunodeficiency virus activities of 2′,3′-dideoxynucleoside analogs such as didanosine. We have now evaluated in vitro the effect of hydroxyurea on the antiherpesvirus activities of several nucleoside analogs (acyclovir [ACV], ganciclovir [GCV], penciclovir [PCV], lobucavir [LBV], (R)-9-[4-hydroxy-

6. Phenotypic variation of Staphylococcus epidermidis in infection of transvenous endocardial pacemaker electrodes.
Coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from a patient with a pacemaker electrode infection were extensively evaluated by phenotypic and genotypic characterization. Findings from this evaluation were striking because different colony morphologic subtypes were recovered from blood and resected pacemaker electrodes. Staphylococci from each colony subtype (LB
