1. Detection and on-line prediction of leak magnitude in a gas pipeline using an acoustic method and neural network data processing
Considering the importance of monitoring pipeline systems, this work presents the development of a technique to detect gas leakage in pipelines, based on an acoustic method, and on-line prediction of leak magnitude using artificial neural networks. On-line audible noises generated by leakage were obtained with a microphone installed in a 60 m long pipeline.

2. Zinc sulphate administered by transdermal iontophoresis improves breaking strength of surgical wounds in skin of alloxan-induced diabetic rats
PURPOSE:To investigate the effect of zinc sulphate administered by transdermal iontophoresis (TDI) on mechanical resistance of surgical wounds performed in the skin of diabetic rats. METHODS:One hundred and sixty male Wistar rats weighing approximately 250g were submitted to an incision surgery at the anterior region of abdomen and randomly distributed into

3. Three essays on local demand for public services
Local provision of public services has the positive effect of increasing the efficiency because each locality has its idiosyncrasies that determine a particular demand for public services. This dissertation addresses different aspects of the local demand for public goods and services and their relationship with political incentives. The text is divided in

4. Detecção e localização de vazamentos em tubulações utilizando sistemas acústicos e redes neurais / Leak detection and location in pipelines through acoustic method and neural networks
Pipeline networks are complex systems of ducts used nowadays for gas and chemical products transporting through long distances. They frequently cross highly populated regions, water supplies or natural reserves. Even small leaks in pipelines can lead to great losses of products and serious damages to the environment before it could be detected. With the purp

5. Proposta de algoritmo para detecção de vazamentos em oleodutos utilizando análise freqüencial de sinais de pressão
Pipeline leak detection is a matter of great interest for companies who transport petroleum and its derivatives, in face of rising exigencies of environmental policies in industrialized and industrializing countries. However, existing technologies are not yet fully consolidated and many studies have been accomplished in order to achieve better levels of sens

6. AnÃlise de focalizaÃÃo e sua aplicaÃÃo para o caso do Programa Bolsa FamÃlia
Given the persistence of poverty in the world social policies direct to reduce its intensity have been adopted recently. I particular, Brazil has adopted direct conditional income transference programs. These policies resulted in poverty and inequaliy reductions. But several studies showed that these policies present targeting problems, that is, the poor are

7. Modelagem matemÃtica e simulaÃÃo computacional do escoamento de petrÃleo parafÃnico em dutos circulares em regime laminar
The Deposition of paraffin is a serious problem in the production and transportation of heavy oil, causing a large increase in the costs of these operations. At the Transporting of paraffinic oil through pipelines subjected to low temperatures environmental, heat will be lost through the walls of the duct and the process of formation and deposition of paraff

8. Application of vermicomposting for the biorremediation of contaminated soil by polycyclic aromatic hidrocarbons / Aplicação de vermicompostagem para a biorremediação de solos contaminados por hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos
One of the main environmental problems that we face today is the soil contamination due to storage fuel tanks leakages. Fuels are comprised of a variety of hydrocarbons, among them are the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Those are classified by US-EPA and NIOSH as prioritary contaminants, due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic characteristics and t

10. Power calibration of the TRIGA mark I nuclear research reactor
This paper presents the results and methodology used to calibrate the thermal power of the TRIGA Mark I IPR-R1 Research Reactor at the Nuclear Technology Development Centre (CDTN), in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The TRIGA Mark I is a pool type reactor, cooled by water natural convection. The method used in the calibration consisted in the steady-state energy bal

11. Leak detection and calibration of transient hydraulic system models / Calibração e detecção de vazamentos em modelos de sistemas hidráulicos no escoamento transitório
The occurrence of large leakage losses in water supply systems has been frequently linked with pipe breaks resulting from high pressures levels in pipes. Efficient location of leakages is required in order to effectively control water losses and quickly repair the system. Analysis of hydraulic transients has been particularly useful for calibration and leak

12. Remediation Process Valuing at UST Sites / Valoração ambiental de processos de remediação de áreas contaminadas por hidrocarbonetos do petróleo
In Brazil there are about 30 thousand gasoline service stations where Underground Storage Tanks (UST) is found and a great number of them raise serious environmental issues by contaminating soil and groundwater. Those issues are provoked due to hydrocarbons derivate from petroleum leakages, originated from bad physical installations, equipment failures or po
