1. Metal Distribution in the Environmental Compartments of Manguaba Lagoon (Alagoas State, Brazil)
The metal concentrations in water, sediments and mollusks (Tagelus plebeius) of the Manguaba Lagoon and the influence of humic substances from water and sediments in the distribution of these metals were investigated in this work. The mean metal concentrations in water were: Mg (89.0 ± 0.11), Ca (32.0 ± 0.10), Fe (0.97 ± 0.02), Mn (0.52 ± 0.01), Zn (0.33

2. Residue-Based CaO Heterogeneous Catalysts from Crab and Mollusk Shells for FAME Production Via Transesterification
The production of fatty acid methyl esther (FAME) via transesterification was studied, assessing the influence of CaO heterogeneous catalysts obtained from four different fishery residues: sururu, crab, clam and mussel. Characterization and properties of the residues were obtained via thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Fourier

3. First inventory of benthic mollusks associated with the reef ecosystems of Morro de São Paulo on Tinharé Island in northeastern Brazil

4. Mollusk bycatch in trawl fisheries targeting the Atlantic seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri on the coast of Sergipe, northeastern Brazil
Abstract The malacofauna bycatch of sea-bob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) trawl fisheries on the coast of Sergipe was studied for 5 years. The malacofauna bycatch considered was obtained in nine oceanographic sampling campaigns carried out between May 1999 and June 2003 in 18 stations distributed in six transects along depths of 10, 20 and 30 m.

5. Morphometric analysis of Littoraria angulifera (Caenogastropoda) in estuarine regions of northeastern Brazil

7. A new heparan sulfate from the mollusk Nodipecten nodosus inhibits merozoite invasion and disrupts rosetting and cytoadherence of Plasmodium falciparum
BACKGROUND Despite treatment with effective antimalarial drugs, the mortality rate is still high in severe cases of the disease, highlighting the need to find adjunct therapies that can inhibit the adhesion of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes (Pf-iEs). OBJECTIVES In this context, we evaluated a new heparan sulfate (HS) from Nodipecten nodosus

8. Genome-wide identification, characterisation and expression profiling of the ubiquitin-proteasome genes in Biomphalaria glabrata
BACKGROUND Biomphalaria glabrata is the major species used for the study of schistosomiasis-related parasite-host relationships, and understanding its gene regulation may aid in this endeavor. The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) performs post-translational regulation in order to maintain cellular protein homeostasis and is related to several mechanisms, i

11. A review on high hydrostatic pressure for bivalve mollusk processing: relevant aspects concerning safety and quality
Abstract Mollusks are considered a nutritious source of food and their consumption has increased worldwide. However, their consumption, mainly of bivalves, has been considered responsible for numerous cases of foodborne diseases. This is related to their food intake, as they are filter-feeders and, consequently, bioaccumulate toxic compounds. High hydrostat

12. Scientometrics of zoonoses transmitted by the giant African snail Achatina fulica Bowdich, 1822
ABSTRACT The dissemination of the giant African snail Achatina fulica in several countries has triggered a great number of studies on the mollusk, including those on zoonoses related to health in humans. The current research is a scientific survey on articles published in four databases, namely, PubMed, Bireme, Scielo and Lilacs. Results indicate that Brazil
