2. Clinical significance, antimicrobial susceptibility and molecular identification of Nocardia species isolated from children with cystic fibrosis
ABSTRACT Nocardia is an opportunistic pathogen that causes respiratory infections in immunocompromised patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiology, clinical significance and antimicrobial susceptibility of Nocardia species isolated from eight children with cystic fibrosis. The isolated species were identified as Nocardia farcinica, Nocard

3. Nocardia nova causing empyema necessitatis afterlung re-transplantation: a case report
Abstract: We report herein a case of thoracic infection due to Nocardia nova following lung re-transplantation performed for emphysema related to alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. The infection extended from the lung into the pleural space, thoracic wall, and mediastinum, presenting as pericarditis and empyema necessitatis. Nocardia nova was identified by 16S

4. Chemical composition of essential oil from ripe fruit of Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi and evaluation of its activity against wild strains of hospital origin
The essential oil (EO) composition of ripe fruit of S. terebinthifolius Raddi was analyzed by GC-MS. The oil extraction yielded 6.54 ± 1.06% (w/w). Seventeen compounds were identified, accounting for 91.15% of the total oil, where monoterpenes constituted the main chemical class (85.81%), followed by sesquiterpenes (5.34%). The major monoterpene identified

5. First case of Nocardia nova spinal abscess in an immunocompetent patient
Nocardia are a group of aerobic actinomycetes that are filamentous gram-positive, weakly acid-fast, and cause opportunistic infection in immunocompromised patients. Primary Nocardia infection mostly involves lung, skin and less commonly, the central nervous system (CNS). Among Nocardia CNS infections, spinal infection is extremely rare. We describe the first

7. Primary sternal osteomyelitis caused by Nocardia nova: case report and literature review
A 51 year old woman without significant past medical history or risk factors for Nocardia infection developed primary Nocardia nova sternal osteomyelitis with mediastinal abscess, diagnosed with open biopsy. She required prolonged antibiotic therapy and had a favorable outcome. Primary sternal osteomyelitis develops in the absence of a contiguous focus of in

9. Nocardia otitidiscaviarum (GAM-5) induces parkinsonian-like alterations in mouse
Parkinson's disease, a major neurodegenerative disorder in humans whose etiology is unknown, may be associated with some environmental factors. Nocardia otitidiscaviarum (GAM-5) isolated from a patient with an actinomycetoma produced signs similar to Parkinson's disease following iv injection into NMRI mice. NMRI mice were infected intravenously with a non-l

10. Modified Thayer-Martin medium for recovery of Nocardia species from contaminated specimens.
Specimens submitted for isolation of Nocardia species are frequently contaminated with other bacteria. Although decontamination with sodium hydroxide or benzalkonium chloride can remove these bacteria, this treatment is also toxic for Nocardia species. We demonstrate that modified Thayer-Martin medium can be used for selective isolation of Nocardia species.

11. Use of a siderophore detection medium, ethylene glycol degradation, and beta-galactosidase activity in the early presumptive differentiation of Nocardia, Rhodococcus, Streptomyces, and rapidly growing Mycobacterium species.
A simplified scheme for the presumptive early identification of Nocardia, Rhodococcus, rapidly growing Mycobacterium, and Streptomyces species is presented. The Nocardia and Streptomyces spp. and the Mycobacterium spp. were positive. The spp. were positive for siderophore activity, but only 25% of the Rhodococcus spp. were positive. The Rhodococcus and Mycob

12. In Vitro Activities of Linezolid against Multiple Nocardia Species
Linezolid was tested by broth microdilution against 140 clinical Nocardia isolates belonging to seven species. The MIC at which 50% of the strains are inhibited (MIC50) and MIC90 for all species other than Nocardia farcinica were 2 and 4 μg/ml. Linezolid is the first antimicrobial agent demonstrated to be active against all Nocardia species.
