2. Nocardia otitidiscaviarum (GAM-5) induces parkinsonian-like alterations in mouse
Parkinson's disease, a major neurodegenerative disorder in humans whose etiology is unknown, may be associated with some environmental factors. Nocardia otitidiscaviarum (GAM-5) isolated from a patient with an actinomycetoma produced signs similar to Parkinson's disease following iv injection into NMRI mice. NMRI mice were infected intravenously with a non-l

3. Endobronchial nocardial infection.
The rare presentation of nocardial infection as an endobronchial "tumour" is reported. Haematogenous dissemination occurred after fibreoptic bronchoscopy and biopsy, a phenomenon not previously described in nocardial infections. This case highlights the difficulties in diagnosing pulmonary nocardial infection and the potential for invasive procedures to diss

5. Monoclonal antibodies demonstrate that superoxide dismutase contributes to protection of Nocardia asteroides within the intact host.
The importance of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in protecting cells of Nocardia asteroides from the oxidative killing mechanisms within the intact murine host was determined. Murine monoclonal antibodies specific for nocardial SOD and for another nocardial antigen were prepared. Both antibodies adhered to cell surface antigens, as shown by fluorescence-labeled-

7. Effect of cyclophosphamide on experimental Nocardia asteroides infection in mice.
It was found that cells of Nocardia asteroides GUH-2 (virulent) were approximately 10 times more virulent than cells of N. asteroides 14759 (intermediate) and greater that 500 times more virulent than N. asteroides 10905 (avirulent) cells when early-stationary-phase cultures suspended in saline were injected intravenously into "normal" mice. There appeared t

8. Induction of L-phase variants of Nocardia caviae within intact murine lungs.
The data presented show that cells of Nocardia caviae 112 were converted to cell wall-deficient microbial variants within the intact murine lung after intranasal administration. At the time that these L-phase variants were recovered in large numbers from the lung, there was a correspondingly enhanced inflammation leading to alveolar consolidation and animal

9. Lung response to congenitally athymic (nude), heterozygous, and Swiss Webster mice to aerogenic and intranasal infection by Nocardia asteroides.
Congenitally athymic (nude, Nu/Nu), heterozygous (Nu/+), and Swiss Webster mice were exposed to virulent Nocardia asteroides GUH-2 inhaled from aerosols or administered intranasally. Clearance of the bacteria from the lungs was determined at 6 h and 1, 2, 3 and 7 days after infection. N. asteroides aspirated into the lungs from intranasal administration were

10. Adoptive transfer of immunity to Nocardia asteroides in nude mice.
Nude mice on a BALB/c background were adoptively transferred with unprimed spleen cells, Nocardia-primed spleen cells, or Nocardia-primed splenic T lymphocytes from syngeneic, heterozygous (nu/+) littermates. Two days later, these recipient mice and unmanipulated (control) nude mice were infected intravenously with a 50% lethal dose of Nocardia asteroides GU

11. Nocardia species as an etiologic agent in Parkinson's disease: serological testing in a case-control study.
To test the hypothesis that Nocardia spp. may be an etiologic factor in Parkinson's disease (PD), we used a serodiagnostic panel to determine if PD patients had antibodies specific for Nocardia spp. To validate the serological test panel, sera from healthy volunteers and from patients with culture-proven nocardiosis (n = 307) were compared in part 1 of the s

12. Nocardial endophthalmitis: report of two cases studied histopathologically.
We report two cases of nocardial endophthalmitis. Case 1 is a 66-year-old man whose left eye was enucleated about one month after onset of decreased vision. Ophthalmoscopic examination disclosed multiple choroidal masses. Six weeks before the onset of ocular manifestations he had undergone a prolonged carotid endarterectomy with intraoperative complications.
