1. Fish habitat associations along a longitudinal gradient in a preserved coastal Atlantic stream, Brazil
ABSTRACT Habitat conditions at multiple scales are one of the major factors structuring ichthyofauna. Thus, we analyzed the fish habitat associations along the headwater-mouth gradient of a coastal Atlantic stream. We categorized the sampling sites into habitat units, so that in the middle reach these categories were statistically differentiated into riffles

2. Occurrence of Hirudinea species in a post urban reach of a Patagonian mountain stream
Temporal (May 2005 to February 2006) and habitat distribution (pools and riffles) of Hirudinea species was analyzed at a post urban reach from Esquel stream (Chubut province, Patagonia, Argentina). Site was located 5.7 km downstream a Waste Treatment Plant. Mean values of nutrients: ammonia, nitrates and soluble reactive phosphate, as well water conductivity

3. Ecological distribution of stream macroalgae in different spatial scales using taxonomic and morphological groups
We examined the ecological distribution of macroalgal communities in streams using species groups (taxonomic units = algal phyla, and morphological = morphological types) with similar structures and functions instead of the species themselves. The study was conducted from June to July/2007 in two drainage basins located in mid-southern region of Paraná Stat

4. Spatial variations at different observational scales and the seasonal distributions of stream macroalgae in a Brazilian subtropical region
We examined the relationships between environmental variations in lotic ecosystems with the seasonal dynamics of macroalgae communities at different spatial scales: drainage basin of two rivers (Rio das Pedras and Rio Marrecas), shading (open and shaded stream segments), mesohabitat (riffles and pools), and microhabitats. Data collections were made on a mont

6. Distribution patterns and trophic characteristics of salmonids and native species inhabiting high altitude rivers of Pampa de Achala region, Argentina
The Pampa de Achala in central Argentina is an area with low fish species richness where salmonids were first introduced at the beginning of the twentieth century. A total of 19 rivers of different order were sampled during the low water period by using portable electrofishing equipment. We covered different identified macrohabitats (pools, riffles, glides a

7. A complexidade do substrato e o mesohabitat (remanso e corredeira) são farores que influenciam a fauna de Chironomidae (Diptera) em riachos do Brasil Central? / Are the substrate complexity and the mesohabitat (pools and riffles) factors that influence the fauna of Chironomidae (Diptera) in streams of Central Brazil?
The present study had the aim to test the effects of the substrate complexity and of the mesohabitat (pools and riffles) on the richness, abundance and composition of Chironomidae (Diptera) in streams. The experiment took place in 12 streams of Central Brazil. In each stream, two plastic trays were put in each one of the two studied mesohabitats (pool and ri

8. Ciclo de vida, produtividade secundária, distribuição, alimentação e crescimento de Massartella brieni (Lestage) (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae) em riachos do Parque Estadual Intervales, Estado de São Paulo / Life cycle, secondary production, distribution, feeding habits and growth of Massartela brieni from streams of the Parque Estadual Intervales, State of São Paulo
The present work had as general aim to study the life cycle, secondary production, distribution, feeding habits and growth of Massartela brieni from streams of the Parque Estadual Intervales, State of São Paulo. The analyzed material was collected in six collection stations, one in Roda d´Água stream, one in Mirante stream, one in Bocaina stream, two in

9. Environmental constraints structuring fish assemblages in the river Paraíba do Sul watershed: Land use condition, habitat and physico-chemical water quality. / Condicionantes ambientais estruturadoras das assembléias de peixes da bacia do rio Paraíba do Sul: Condição do uso da terra, do habitat físico e qualidade físico-química da água.
Structure and dynamic of the Paraíba do Sul fish assemblages and their relationship with environmental constraints in both regional (e.g. altitude, area of drainage, flow and land use) and local (microhabitat and physico-chemical) scales were studied. A fish sampling programme was carried out in the whole extension of the main channel (1100 km) and in the s

10. Uso de macroinvertebrados bentônicos na avaliação do impacto antropogênico às nascentes do Parque Estadual do Jaraguá, São Paulo, SP / The use of benthic macroinvertebrates for the assessment of anthropogenic impact on streams of Jaraguá State Park, São Paulo, SP
Due to the importance of benthic macroinvertebrates to assess water quality and the advantages of their utilization as bioindicators, these organisms were employed to assess the possible antropogenic impact in four streams located in Jaraguá State Park (São Paulo, SP). In each stream the benthic macroinvertebrates were collected in 5 pools and 5 riffles wi

11. Heterogeneidade de habitats: rasos x fundos em assembléias de peixes de igarapés de terra firme na Amazônia Central, Brasil
Assemblage structure is related to predictable patterns of species composition, richness, and abundance. Stream habitat heterogeneity can be approached by two markedly hydrological sorts, riffles and pools, mainly featured by current, depth and substrate. Riffle and pool effect was studied on fish assemblages of three headwater terra firme rainforest streams

12. Response of the microflora in outdoor experimental streams to pentachlorophenol: compartmental contributions.
Outdoor artificial streams were treated continuously with pentachlorophenol (PCP) for 88 days during the summer of 1983. The contributions of different stream compartments (microbial habitats) to microbial degradation of PCP were determined in a stream treated with 144 micrograms of PCP per liter. The 488-m long stream was composed of mud-bottomed pools alte
