1. Variabilidade da largura e intensidade da Zona de Convergência Intertropical Atlântica: aspectos observacionais e de modelagem / Variability of the width and intensity of the Atlantic Intertropical Convergence Zone: Observational and modeling aspects

3. Tuberculosis and AIDS co-morbidity in Brazil: linkage of the tuberculosis and AIDS databases
This study evaluated differences in AIDS patients with and without tuberculosis (TB) in Espírito Santo State, Brazil. Standard regional AIDS (SINAN, SISCEL, SICLOM and SIM) and tuberculosis (SINAN) databases were used. TB and AIDS databases were linked using Reclink software, version 3, with SPSS software support to identify co-infected cases. Data from Jul

4. Consequências climáticas da desertificação parcial do semi-árido do nordeste brasileiro / Climatic consequences of gradual desertification of the semi-arid region of northeast Brazil
The climatic impacts of partial desertification in the Semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil (SANEB) are evaluated by regional model (MM5) simulations. Maps of natural vegetation (without human influence; SANEB covered predominantly by dry shrubland known as caatinga), total desertification (replacement of the natural vegetation by desert in SANEB), partial d

5. Climatic consequences of gradual desertification of the semi-arid region of northeast Brazil / Consequências climáticas da desertificação parcial do semi-árido do nordeste brasileiro

6. Caracterização física e dinâmica de episódios de chuvas intensas nas regiões sul e sudeste do Brasil / Physical and dynamical characteristics of heavy rainfall episodes in southern and southeastern Brazil
The heavy rainfall events occurred in Southern and Southeastern Brazil between 1960 and 2004 are investigated. It is observed positive trends in the annual frequency of these events in both regions in this period of 45 years. The trend in Southern Brazil is more significant. The atmospheric environments associated with these events also are investigated, but

7. Uso de um modelo regional de clima-vegetação para estimativa dos componentes da evapotranspiração sob condições climáticas atuais e futuras de aquecimento global / Use of a regional model of climate-vegetation for estimate of components of the reference evapotranspiration under current and future climatic conditions of global warming

8. Comparison of the effects of lactated Ringer solution with and without hydroxyethyl starch fluid resuscitation on gut edema during severe splanchnic ischemia
The type of fluid used during resuscitation may have an important impact on tissue edema. We evaluated the impact of two different regimens of fluid resuscitation on hemodynamics and on lung and intestinal edema during splanchnic hypoperfusion in rabbits. The study included 16 female New Zealand rabbits (2.9 to 3.3 kg body weight, aged 8 to 12 months) with s

9. MODELOS DE CRESCIMENTO DE QUATRO ESPÉCIES MADEIREIRAS DE FLORESTA DE VÁRZEA DA AMAZÔNIA CENTRAL POR MEIO DE MÉTODOS DENDROCRONOLÓGICOS
Timber harvesting is an important economic activity in nutrient-rich floodplain forests (várzea) of Central Amazonia. In the Western Amazon basin of Brazil and Peru, access to terra firme forests is restricted due to the absence of a road network. Still, 6090% of the local and regional markets are provided with timber obtained from the floodplain forests. C

11. Short-lasting systemic and regional benefits of early crystalloid infusion after intravenous inoculation of dogs with live Escherichia coli
We investigated the systemic and regional hemodynamic effects of early crystalloid infusion in an experimental model of septic shock induced by intravenous inoculation with live Escherichia coli. Anesthetized dogs received an intravenous infusion of 1.2 x 10(10) cfu/kg live E. coli in 30 min. After 30 min of observation, they were randomized to controls (no

12. Distribution and characterisation of rat choroidal mast cells.
Despite the implication that choroidal mast cells are involved in the onset of experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU), a widely used animal model of uveoretinitis, little is known of these cells. In the present study the distribution, total number, regional density, and phenotype of choroidal mast cells were examined in Lewis, Wistar Furth, PVG/c, and b
